Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Agnes Marie Sailor. Agnes quietly slipped away on September 28, 2022 in the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo General Hospital.
Agnes was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan on November 3, 1927 to Ernest and Alvina Hawksworth. The family moved to Port Alberni in the 1940’s and it is where Agnes married Lawrence Sailor and raised her family. Agnes is survived by her loving children: Cynthia Lauder (Dan), Deborah Daney-Sailor (Jim), Holly Cyr and Mark Sailor (Selma) as well as her brother Richard Hawksworth. She also leaves to mourn nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Agnes is predeceased by her son Kenneth Sailor, her two brothers Frank and Joe Hawksworth and her partner Herb Wintemute.
Agnes was an active member of the community before she became ill. She enjoyed bowling, was a Moose member and, when she was younger belonged to a softball team and a hiking group. She loved to get dressed up and socialize and never missed a banquet for any of the teams or groups with whom she was involved. World events, politics and watching sports on tv were her passions and she would gladly engage in conversations on any of these topics. She was still commenting on the players in a game on tv in her final days while in the hospital. Jokes were popular with Mom as she loved to laugh and we found lots of cartoons clipped from newspapers in her home.
Mom was well-liked by others, she was honest and wouldn’t back down about her opinions. The day she went to the hospital in an ambulance people in her apartment building came out onto their balconies waving good-bye and calling well wishes to her. This was in addition to a couple of people on the ground who walked over to wish her well. She was smiling and waving to people as she was loaded into the ambulance.
Our family thanks the amazing staff members of the Palliative Care unit at Nanaimo General Hospital from the bottom of our hearts!
There will be a small gathering in Mom’s memory in early November.
