It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Yvonne Johnstone age
95, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, on Friday December 10, 2021 at the
Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, December 8, 1926, Yvonne was the daughter of the late Simon
and Grace Nora (Cunning) Tucker. From humble beginnings she went on to live a remarkable life of sacrifice and service. In her teenage years, to help support her family, she left school and
went to work at Jackson’s Market as a clerk and delivered many grocery orders balanced on the
front of her bicycle. She loved her involvement in the Baptist Youth Fellowship at her church and was most proud when she won first place in a public speaking contest at Acadia University while attending a youth conference. After her marriage to Earl in 1947, together they established their home at Fairholme Farm and worked hard to build the farm and raise their family. A born leader, she often talked about starting school at the age of three. We think her
mother most likely took her to school and begged them to let her attend so as to keep her busy!
Over her lifetime her endeavours and accomplishments were many. A wife, mother, youth
group leader at Calvary Baptist Church (where she fondly earned the title of ‘The Warden’!),
Sunday school teacher, gardener who loved both her gardens and her involvement in the North
Sydney Garden Club, caterer, seamstress, 4-H leader, flower judge, and on and on. No
challenge was too great for her to attempt. A strong supporter of the Cape Breton County
Exhibition for over 80 years, her sewing, flowers, and baked goods were always on display.
She served countless cups of tea and meals around the family table and generously shared all
she had with others. The recipient of countless awards over her lifetime, she was pleased and
humbled when she received a commemorative medal for the 125th anniversary of confederation awarded for volunteerism.
Fiercely protective of family and her Christian faith, nothing took precedence over
church attendance and involvement. Every decision reflected her commitment to her Lord and
Saviour. In her later years she was a member of the Board of Directors for Atlantic Baptist
Housing and it is fitting that she lived her final years in Fairview Court, one of their apartment
complexes. The cruel disease of dementia robbed her mind but her indomitable spirit and faith
were evident to the end. She is now at peace.
Yvonne is survived by her husband Earl Johnstone, daughters Anne (Allen) Sullivan,
Pleasantville, NS, Louise (John) Yahn, Cambridge, ON, Susan (Wally) Hannem, Timberlea, NS,
four grandchildren, Cheryl (Jerry), Michael (Stacey), Jane (Jonah), and Louise, eight great
grandchildren, Luke, Grace, Elias, Ian, Zoe, Nina, Helen, and Claire, also by several nieces and
nephews. Besides her parents Yvonne was predeceased by her brother Art (Nancy) Tucker.
