Wayne Joseph Hooper
1953-2021
Surrounded by family and friends, Wayne passed away in his
home in Uigg after a long period of illness with cancer on Friday,
December 10th, 2021. Born on March 21st, 1953, in
Charlottetown PE, Wayne spent his early life in Bedford, PE. He earned
a business degree from UPEI, and later moved to Ottawa to article and
achieve his Chartered Accountant designation. He returned to the
Island in 1979 to start a family, and settled in Eastern PEI. Wayne
traveled the world over the course of his life, but always returned
home to the Island. He is predeceased by his mother, Marie Hooper (nee
McQuaid), his father Reginald Hooper, his stepfather George MacDonald,
his sister Paula Mullen (nee Hooper), his grandniece Leah Satine
Harding, as well as many other dearly missed friends and
family.
Left to miss Wayne are his cherished wife, Carol Burton; his
beloved children Joshua (Rosey) and Whitney (Neil); his adored
grandson Harvey; his siblings David Hooper (Paula), Karen Hooper
(Dave), Eric Hooper (Bernie), and Sonya Hooper (Ben), along with
nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues, and family the world
over.
Wayne had an extensive and varied career that included senior
leadership positions in numerous government departments and agencies,
both provincially and federally. He devoted himself to each
of his roles with passion and commitment, offering thoughtful
guidance, mentorship and a dose of humour to those around
him. While Wayne thoroughly enjoyed his career, he spent the last ten
years making the most of retirement by traveling, spending time with
his family, enjoying life in Castleford, UK with Carol and their
extended family, and being Papa to his precious Harvey. Wayne loved
fishing, taking walks through the woods of Uigg, boating on the
Brudenell River and debating politics or sharing jokes with friends
and family. He always enjoyed a good conversation over a game of crib,
poker, Five Crowns or pool and was often busy working on his house or
helping family members with their own tasks. Wayne was a caring
friend, a tireless adventurer and deeply proud of his family. Even
from half a world away, he would always be there if you needed him
with advice, a good joke or a supportive shoulder to lean on. For
everyone who knew him, he was a wealth of wisdom, humour, strength and
kindness, and he will be missed more than words can
say.
