Wayne Cruikshank Friday July 9th 2021

Geoffrey “Wayne” Cruikshank, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2021 at the Olds Hospital at the age of 73. Wayne was born in Calgary at the General Hospital on Thanksgiving morning, October 13, 1947 to Jack Lindsey Cruikshank and Lillian Ruth Thurn (Cruikshank). Wayne attended schools in Calgary (Bridgeland school), Rimbey, Ferintosh, Sundre, Olds and SAIT. As a child, Wayne attended boy scouts, loved to swim, and play hockey. He played on many of the hockey teams from atom through midget as well as the Olds Oldtimers for many years. Many would agree he was an all-around good athlete. In early adulthood he worked on a construction crew, oil rigs and drove a truck for Nowsco. Wayne attended SAIT in 1971-72 and took Petroleum Engineering Tech and worked for various oilfield companies while living in Calgary. In 1984, he bought Ronwood Petroleum Services and gained most of his experience in the oil and gas field. In 1998, Wayne started working at Parkland with Earl Wilkes and Rod Donovan. During this time, he formed many strong friendships, and it was this, that he truly lived for. He attended many of the oilman’s bonspiels and golf tournaments which included a yearly guys trip to various different golf courses in Kalispell and Saskatchewan. Some of the many men he curled and played golf with were: Bill McNabb, Dick Smethurst, Wally Owchar, Ron Sucht, Ron Thorpe, Jack Adair, Randy Barrett, Brent Hallett, Steve Knapp, Earl Wilkes, Ed Burnett, Dale Machan, Randy Bartley, Steven Johnson, Steve Richardson, Rick Davidson and Bruce Stevens. This is just a few of the many companions he enjoyed sports with. Wayne and Phyllis had a strong group of friends whom they spent many weekends with. Their time was spent around the campfire at the quarter, with someone playing the guitar, playing cards, having drinks and sharing many laughs. We wanted to take a special moment to thank Earl & Dianne, Rod & Peggy and Tina & Dale for being such wonderful friends to Wayne and Phyllis. They also had a tremendous amount of support from their friends and neighbors in their condo. No matter what, you could always call Wayne to help out and he was never bothered at all. If there was something he could do to help a friend or make someone happy, he couldn’t say no. He had a great sense of humor and was always a lot of fun. Even when he was unwell, he would crack jokes with the nurses. The family would like to recognize the caregivers at the Olds Hospital, who made Wayne as comfortable as possible before his passing. Dr. Kuttsky was especially caring and compassionate towards Wayne. Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his wife Phyllis Cruikshank of 25 years; daughters Nadene (Cameron) Kryway of Calgary and Lisa (Rick) Jocson of Calgary; six grandchildren, Ava, Ainsley, Tyson, Georgia, Jude and Luke; Celia (Randy) Gaudet, Jacquelin (Gary) Latimer, Jim (Cecile) Cruikshank as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his parents Jack and Lillian Cruikshank. In keeping with Wayne’s wishes, a private family service was held. A Come & Go Open House was held on Friday July 16, 2021 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, Olds. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
