Obituary for
Truus Carter (Van Eyk)
It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of our mother, Truus Carter, on February 15th. Mom began her life journey in Hoogeveen, The Netherlands and at the age of 12 immigrated to Canada with her family. Mom and her six siblings were essentially raised single-handedly by our Grandmother, Truus Van Eyk. Mom began working at the age of 16 to help support her younger siblings. Eventually, Mom was hired at the Majestic Restaurant where she met our Father, Tom Carter who was walking the beat as a Welland Police Officer, and noticed that Mom was out of sorts with a toothache. Dad bought her some medication and then returned to ask her on a date. They were married two years later and began a family raising two children; Des and Teresa. Aside from being a home-maker, mother and wife, Mom was also an entrepreneur. She and Dad set up two businesses at 15 Niagara St., Welland. The first business was the Red Rose Restaurant in the 70’s, and the second was the Niagara Deli in the 80’s. Mom worked hard at both businesses and both were later sold. Another of Mom’s passions was line dancing, which she did for some 20 years. She loved staying active through dance and made many friends during their classes. Mom also volunteered at Woodlands of Sunset where her mother spent her golden years. After Grandma passed, Mom continued to work as a volunteer and did so until her knees gave her too much trouble. Mom’s latter years were spent living at 45 Pelham Town Square, and again, made many friends. All of the visits from her neighbours during her illness will never be forgotten. Our family thanks property managers Catherine King and Francesca Felice for helping to create a great home and community for Mom. Mom will always be remembered for her selflessness. Even during her brief struggle with cancer, Mom always asked her caregivers about their family and children. Speaking of caregivers, our family is eternally grateful to so many at this difficult time. It’s hard to thank everyone, but all those who helped in any way to brighten her day or manage her care were a blessing. Right from her diagnosis at the Welland General Hospital to the very end of life, Mom was treated with compassion, dignity and respect. The Doctors, Nurses and LHIN Staff in the Welland Emergency Department were absolutely incredible. The LHIN’s Palliative Team were an invaluable resource and went above and beyond to ensure she received excellent care. A special acknowledgment to Dr. Dooler, Ann (Welland Emerg.), Nora (Palliative Coordinator) and to Palliative Nurses Colleen and Trina. Our family would also like to recognize the VON E-Shift staff, the caregivers from Paramed and especially the « I’m Here Homecare » team (thank you Shie, Flo and others!!). Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to Diane Gwartz for her compassion and support. In keeping with her wishes, Mom will be laid to rest at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens on February 19th beside her mother. Mom will be missed by her family; husband Tom, daughter Teresa (Glen) and son Des. She will also be missed by her siblings: Ary, Paul & Jenny, and grandchildren: Carter, Breean, and Larissa. We love you Mom! May you rest in eternal peace and know once again the embraces of Grandma and other loved ones who passed before you.
