THORSON, Lylia Virtue (née Gibson)
September 10, 1937 — October 10, 2021
Peacefully and surrounded by family, Lylia Virtue Thorson passed away on October 10, 2021, at 85. Her caring and generous spirit will be dearly missed.
Born in a farm house in Saskatchewan, near Cupar, SK, Lylia moved to Golden, BC in 1955 to be with her sister Jean. There, in 1956, she and Robert “Bob” Thorson married. Lylia always worked, in Golden she was a chambermaid and waitress, then in Kelowna, BC she worked in healthcare as an LPN, retired from Kelowna General Hospital in the early 2000s. She was a helpful and happy coworker, and of course she had many friends through work. Before Lylia and Bob moved to Kelowna in 1970, they had grown their family and added two children.
Always busy, Lylia crocheted many blankets for friends and gave away many, for raffles for her church and other groups. She attended church regularly in Rutland, BC at the Anglican church. She really loved ice cream, always tried to be happy, and always wanted to help.
Lylia will be lovingly remembered by her children Ed “Dee” and Cindy; her three grandchildren Chloe Jay Heigh, Tara Celeste Heigh, and Dion James Heigh; her surviving siblings Doreen Hall of Cupar, SK and Gary Gibson of Fort Qu’appelle, SK; and her sons-in-law Dwight Heigh and Peter Eisenbock. Sadly she was predeceased by her dear husband Robert “Bob” Thorson in 2008 and her sister Jean Lockett in 2018.
We wish to thank all the caregivers and support staff at Fembrey Manner, Brookhaven Manor, and Cottonwoods Care Home for their kindness and family assistance during our mom’s final years. You people are very special and the true Heroes of our healthcare system. Your kindness and professionalism gave us confidence when Mom first had to look at alternative living arrangements, and your kindness and professionalism allowed our mom a dignified passing.
A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at 10:00 am, at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, 2850 Dry Valley Rd, Kelowna, BC.
To honour Lylia go have an Ice Cream Treat and think happy thoughts or, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada.
