Thomas Greene
March 18, 1942 – February 19, 2021

With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Thomas Joseph Greene, (Tom) on Friday, February 19, 2021 after a brief illness.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Madeline and Charlie, and his sisters Ann and Georgina. Leaving to mourn, his wife of almost 58 years, Florence, his 3 loving daughters, Gigi (John) Downton, Michelle Greene (Harold Guzzwell, deceased) and Jacqueline (Chris) Byrne. His pride and joy, his 5 grandchildren, Michael (Marley), Sarah Jane (Connor) and Maria Downton, and Sydney and Catherine Guzzwell; as well as his sisters Mary Sarzynski, Edwina Dizenzo, Bridie (Liam) Sneyd and Dolores Brace, and his brother Allan. Also leaving a large circle of relatives and friends including his brother in law Charlie (Joan) Furey and sister in law Sr. Marie Furey; family friend Nancy Constantine, his neighbours Gerald and Mabel Tobin and his close friends, Al Newhook and Linda and Terry Tomlinson.
Tom was the kindest and most genuine man we have had the privilege of knowing, and we will not forget his generosity, his devotion to his family or his silly jokes, all of which endeared him to everyone he knew.
Tom was well-known in the community. In the early 1960’s, he was a proud member of HMCS Cabot Naval Reserves. He spent most of his working life cooking for others. He was a fixture at Ches’s Fish & Chips in its early years and to this day, people know him from that time. Later in his career, he worked on the provincial ferries and subsequently joined the hospital system, first at St. Clare’s and later at the Central Kitchen of Eastern Health, from which he retired in 2004.
In his retirement years, Tom shared his love of cooking with others. He was an avid baker known for his famous “tea buns » and artfully decorated children’s birthday cakes, “Cakes by Tom “. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many outdoor swings and chairs. Many will remember Tom from his years of having booths at the Regatta and in later years, he loved his annual walk around the lake on Regatta Eve. He was a member of the St. Pat’s alumni and always looked forward to the annual dinner. He bowled in the seniors’ league, played darts on Monday night at the Knights of Columbus, swam at the Mews Center and was active in St. Teresa’s Parish. He also dearly loved his canine buddy, Jack.
Tom Greene was a great friend to many, an original who will never be forgotten by those who loved him. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be delayed until a later date.
“Those we love don’t go away.
They walk beside us everyday.
Unseen, unheard, but always near.
Still loved, always missed and forever dear.”
