Thiruchelvam Shanmugam was born in the state of Tamil Nadu, India on August 8, 1946. He was the son of K.S. Shanmugam and Pasupathee Shanmugam. His family moved to Malaysia during his childhood. He returned to India when he was 17 to attend university. While there, he met Shaana Cherian, whom he married in 1970. They had two children, Yohan and Naditha. Thiru became a printer, learning the trade from scratch. He began with a letter press, and graduated to an offset printing press, printing for banks and advertising agencies. He remained in the printing business until 2009.
Around that time, he struggled with illness and came to Canada for 6 months in 2011 to be with his daughter and grandchildren. In 2012, he and Shaana immigrated to Canada as permanent residents. While God moved Nanditha and family to the USA, Thiru and Shaana remained in Canada, struggling to adapt to the culture and seasons of Canada. This forced them to depend upon God every day.
Through the influence of their niece, they met Audrey Bates, who took them to church. In the spring of 2017, they began attending Graceway Baptist Church. Thiru was an atheist at that time. However, through the preaching and friendship of Pastor Walt Isaak, Thiru came to know Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour. He and Shaana were baptized on May 6, 2018.
Thiru continued to grow in his spiritual understanding and love for God and His Word. Over the past few months, the Lord led him through a valley of physical and emotional difficulties. During this time, he found it difficult to read His Bible, but he tasted the morsels of God’s Word through cards, letters, and conversations with Shaana and Pastor Isaak. In the end, he eagerly anticipated his entrance into the glories of Heaven and the presence of his Saviour. Thiru passed peacefully into the arms of His Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2021.

He is survived by his wife, Shaana Thiruchelvam, his son Yohan Thiruchelvam, his daughter Nanditha Zuckerman (husband Shawn) and their 4 children, and a brother Vijayan Shanmugam.
A time of visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021, 6:00-8:00pm and again on Thursday, February 4th, 2:00-4:00pm. Under COVID-19 restrictions, registration is required to attend these visitations. A funeral will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 7:00pm at the McKersie-Kocher Funeral Home, Milton, ON.
