Suzan Sandau (nee Stephens)
It is with great sadness we are announcing the passing of Ms. Suzan Jane Sandau (nee Stephens) at the age of 67yrs old on February 24th, 2021.
Suzan was born on December 12, 1953 in Hearst ON to her parents Alex and Bella Stephens.
Suzan loved all her family and friends. Family was very important to her. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and cousins. Whether it was going for dinner, shopping, taking nature walks, family gatherings.
Suzan was very passionate about the Mushkego Cree Language. Having been mentored for many years by Elder Angela Moore from Constance Lake First Nation, she developed into a master speaker and was an expert in the Cree syllabic writing system. She became a Native Language Specialist/Teacher in the late 70’s and acquired her Bachelor of Education. She also translated throughout her life for many including First Nations and government. She taught at many levels from University to Elementary to children and adults throughout the years on how to speak Cree. Her dream was to create a curriculum to be taught in the Canadian school system. May of 2019, she began making that dream a reality when she began working within the Matawa Education Department with two Maori Indigenous Language Specialists from Aotearoa (New Zealand). Unfortunately, Suzan was not able to complete the curriculum.
Suzan is preceded in death by her husband Randy, parents Alex and Bella Stephens, sisters Jemima and Elizabeth, brother Jimmy and daughter Kim Annabella. She is survived by her children Jason (Rosanne), Wendy (Devon), Gaston, sisters Madeline, Gloria, Christine and brother Stanley, grandchildren Cyanne, Mya, Kya, Nyema, Austin and many Nieces, Nephews, and cousins.
Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican on June 12th, 2021 Time: TBA. Service will be held for immediate Family due to Covid, but can be viewed via live stream. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
