Obituary of Shirley Mary Long
On July 20, 2021, we said « so long » to Shirley Mary Long (née Mann) at 98 years old.
Our hearts may be heavy, but they’re also full to the brim of beautiful memories of an incredible friend, mom, grandmother, nan and great-grandmother (GG).
Shirley’s story started nearly 99 years ago in St. Catherines, Ontario. She was the youngest of five girls and two boys. In her early twenties she met Jack and together they had three kids of their own, Ralph, James and Cheryl.
Her first grandchild was born in the spring of 1981. By 2021, Shirley was a grandmother to seven, a great-grandmother (GG) to four, and an honorary grandmother to countless others. In her 90’s, she embraced technology, and used her new skills to FaceTime with great-grandchildren Michaela, Isla and Jak when seeing them in person wasn’t possible.
Shirley’s family was her greatest joy. Her arms and her home were always open, not just to relatives, but anyone in need of a warm and loving haven. She was also a wonderful friend who enjoyed meeting a tight-knit group at the mall for coffee nearly every day. There was always something on Shirley’s stove or in her oven. She’ll be remembered for her famous spaghetti, ribs, cheese dreams, warm chocolate chip cookies, jam and butter tarts. And of course we’ll never forget the pies she’d effortlessly bake at the cottage with fresh raspberries picked by the grandchildren.
Shirley’s life should be one that’s celebrated. So rather than cry, raise a glass – preferably of German Riesling – and remember the amazing, fun-loving woman she was. We’ll miss you, Nan. So long.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Shirley Mary Long 2021..
