Shirley Marion Pudney nee Robertson Born June 9, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario, passed away peacefully surrounded by family June 4, 2O21 in Kamloops B.C, just a few days shy of her 96th birthday.
Shirley, the only daughter of George and Elsie Robertson, was raised with her two brothers Donald and Gordon in Toronto. On April 3, 1948, she married Sydney John Pudney, her beloved husband of 73 years. They embarked on a tour of northern Ontario, living wherever the CPR sent them; quite a lifestyle change for a big-city girl. 18 years and 3 children later they decided a change in direction was needed and they moved the family to Squamish B.C., their home for the next 35 years.
The family home was a reflection of Shirley’s elegance and taste, from the rose gardens outside to the polished Maple furniture inside. Shirley worked many years in the Library of the Squamish high school, it helped her “keep an eye” on her kids as they passed through the school. She had an artistic flair and learned some unique skills: hat making, English smocking, and paper quilling, some of those skills she was able to pass down through to her granddaughters over the years.
Shirley became a Life Member of the United Church Women in 1983, devoting many hours of service to the UCW and to the United Church and developed many long lasting friendships.
She was an avid sports fan; she enjoyed discussing hockey and baseball games with her grandchildren. Even though she lost her sight at a late stage in her life, she was able to follow games by commentary.
After retiring Shirley realized a longtime dream by travelling to Great Britain and finally meeting her grade school pen pal Mary, a connection that began a lifelong friendship. Many trips back and forth followed as they explored Great Britain and Canada together with their husbands. Truly they shared a special sisterhood.
Retirement also brought moves and new adventures in Barriere and finally Kamloops B.C. She will be remembered for her never-ending and enthusiastic support for all of her family’s individual endeavours, whether that meant being the cook for cub camp, helping look after alpacas and chickens, accompanying grandchildren to competitions, or cheering from the grandstands, she was always there for her family.
Shirley is survived by her husband Syd, her 3 children Rob (Grace), Janet (Tim) and Steve (Jodi), 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and friends too numerous to count.
Shirley was much loved and will remain in our hearts forevermore.
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant”.
