Obituary
SEEMANN, Sarah
Surely angels were singing as our lovely mom Sarah Seemann passed on May 19, 2021 after a life of faith, gratitude and excellent health. Mom fully accepted her diagnosis and looked forward to going home to her Lord Jesus Christ. Sarah was born on June 27, 1930 to pioneering immigrant parents and was raised in a crude log house in Garthland, SK. Despite a childhood spent during the Great Depression and later WWII, her stories of Garthland made it sound like a wonderland. The forest was her playground where barefoot she chased tiny blue butterflies, picked wild berries and strung rose hips. Mom couldn’t start school until she was eight years old because there simply weren’t enough clothes or shoes. When she did go, she loved learning. Mom possessed a sharp mind, and she could recite a poem, sing a song or quote scripture from memory at just the appropriate moment. At 19 this beautiful brunette headed for Saskatoon. She treasured the times she lived in a house full of girls where they slept three in a bed and cooked on a hot plate. Soon she met Karl Seemann, a handsome German who was in hospital because of an accident and very glad to be able to speak to someone in his mother tongue. Their first date was on Valentine’s at the Club 400. She wasn’t familiar with his way of dancing, but he was very dashing in his brown suit, white shirt and yellow bow tie. They married on September 26, 1954 and had almost 60 years together before Karl’s passing in 2014, coincidentally also on May 19. They had four children within three years followed by two stragglers. Mom seldom stressed, although there was lots to stress about, because she left her worries to God. Hard work and prayer were her cure for everything. Mom was also hilariously competitive. You had to be thick-skinned to play games with her. She welcomed a challenge and viewed the pandemic as just another test. Alone in her big house, she kept busy writing a time capsule and most impressively, creating a uniquely storied COVID quilt. Mom was a skilled seamstress and a gifted artist. She called herself a woodsy; her happy place being outdoors. She was still able to squat in the bush just two weeks before her passing! She took pride in her bountiful gardens and flower beds. Mom particularly loved the birds that filled her yard with their songs who were the best fed birds in Saskatoon! She responded to every request for charity and faithfully supported her church. Sarah referred to her congregation at the First Mennonite Church as her family and they were very dear to her. It was her family, friends, neighbours and faith that gave her great joy and comfort in life.
Sarah was predeceased by her husband Karl in 2014. She cherished memories of her family: parents Peter and Elizabeth Dyck; siblings Betty Readman, Mary Bartsch, Tena Karolat, Peter Dyck, Jacob Dyck and Henry Dyck. Mom was grateful for the time spent time with each of her children recently while we took turns caring for her. Surviving her are Donna Erickson (Kevin), Diane Seemann (Larry), Gordon Summers (Viviane), Arlene Fedorchuk (Rick), Robert Seemann and Jenifer Parks (Greg). She was revered by grandchildren Amber (Conor), Brandi (Albert), Jesse, Mark (Jessica), Steven (Hannah), Andrea (Chris) and Lucas. She enjoyed special relationships with her great-grandchildren: Apple, Arlo, Django, Rolla, Leif, Paisley, Artyenna, Abigail, Everly, Asher and Zoe.
Mom – you were the glue that kept us all together, and we will miss you in ways we can’t yet imagine. We might not have appreciated your life lessons before, but you’d be happy to know – You were right. We love you and celebrate you as our fierce, feisty, stubborn, joyful mother! We arise up, and call you blessed (Prov 31: 28).
We extend our gratitude to Dr Jodi Parent who went above and beyond, mom’s Cardiology Team at RUH, the nurses and caregivers who tried their very best to mend her heart. To honour Sarah please spend time in nature to replenish your soul, plant a garden to provide for others and cultivate a genuine interest and love for your fellow man. Interment is on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Rosthern. Please join us for a celebration of Sarah’s life in the near future.
