In loving memory of Sandra (Allen) Vehkala (May 23, 1944 – May 13, 2021). With profound sadness we announce the passing of Sandra, our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched. She slipped away from our world in her 77th year after a brave and courageous fight with cancer at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, Ontario. Beloved wife of John (predeceased 2015), and proud and loving mother to Andrew (Stacey) of Sudbury and Mark Vehkala. Cherished Mummu of Hannah and Matthew. Sandra is survived by her loving sister Marlene Fera (late George), sister-in-law Salme Nelson (late Ron), and brother-in-law Matti Vehkala (Gail). Sandra was the much-loved aunt of George Fera (Sherry), William Fera (Sue), Paul Savard (Cynthia), Eric Nelson (Nancy), Susan Nelson, Aaron Vehkala (Courtney), Krissy Leinala (Tommi), many great-nieces and nephews, and an extended family of cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Nellie and William Allen and her sisters Barbara Allen and June Savard (late Pat).
A lifelong resident of South Porcupine, Ontario, and a proud descendent of immigrants from Cornwall, England, Sandra was a loving and selfless person. Her door and arms were always wide open. She was eager to share a laugh (appropriate or not), tell one of her many stories, and you can be assured that nobody ever left hungry. Her homemade Cornish pasties and Finnish pulla were never in short supply.
The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and personal support workers who helped Sandra through her fight and provided treatment, support, and compassion through her hospital stays. We would like to make special mention to Dr. Wilson, Dr. Singh, Dr. Pitre, and PSWs Danielle and Janet for their care and compassion through difficult times. All who loved her dearly will never forget her humour, tenacity, wit, grace, and undying love and caring for them. Many conversations with Sandra with end with “I love you” and “God bless”. A celebration of her life will be held at a future date once restrictions are lifted. In Sandra’s memory, donations can be made to the Special Olympics or the Northeast Cancer Centre, Sudbury.
