Sally Hawkes
February 13, 1927 – June 26, 2020
On Friday, June 26 around 6:10 pm, Sally Hawkes (nee MacIntosh) finished her earthly journey of 93 years, peacefully slipping into the arms of her beloved son Cameron, her husband Wesley and all of her family and friends who had gone before.
She is survived by her daughter Margaret Lannon (Patrick), son Rick (Laura), grandchildren Julie, Josh, Sean and Aden and many loving nephews, nieces and their children and childrens’ children.
Sally was a generous, caring and classy lady who was well known and very well loved by her community of Dyer’s Bay and her extended family. She was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage and also of the fact that the very first McIntosh apple tree was cultivated by her great-great uncle Allan McIntosh in Dundela Ontario. Sally was the last of her generation on both sides of the family.
Sally was born in the village of Andover, New Brunswick on February 13, 1927. On August 21, 1954 she married Wesley and they had three children: Richard, Cameron and Margaret.
In 1985 Sally and Wes bought their home at Brinkman’s Corners Ontario and renovated it to become their dream home. They operated a Bed and Breakfast which they called Camariche, after their three children. Sally was an exquisite cook and Wes was an outgoing and entertaining host and together they hosted guests from around the world.
They were also socially active in their community, known by all. Folks would drop in to visit practically every day, and Sally and Wes were avid members of the local bridge club. A highlight of the year for the whole community was a Christmas wine and cheese party that they hosted for all who would drop in. When Wes passed away in 1994, Sally continued on with the B&B and Christmas party for as long as she was able.
Sally was an amazing hostess to all who visited, and her home was a beloved destination for family. Anyone traveling through, or coming to, Ontario was welcome to stay at Camariche and Sally hosted dozens of relatives over the years. Sally’s obvious love has touched many lives and left beautiful memories for so many people. This is her legacy that will live on.
The family is grateful to many for their love and care of mom, especially her few close friends who faithfully visited and loved mom as their own. Thanks also to the staff of Golden Dawn Nursing Home for their loving care.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 20th 2021 at 2 p.m. at Culberson Funeral Home, 188 Connell Street, Woodstock, NB.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Sally’s honour to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
