It is with heavy hearts and yet hearts full of gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Rudy Smith in his 93rd year. Leaving behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Jean and his five children; Barb, Rudy, Marlene, Rebecca and Randy and their spouses Rob, Lisa, Murray, Tom and Kim.
« Grandpa » Rudy will be deeply missed by his 19 grandchildren; Bronwyn, Erin, Conor, Josh, Katelyn, Kathleen, Ryan, Shannon, Dan, Duncan, Shauna, Hugh, Brittany, Curtis, Scotty, Jeannette, Ben, Katie and Luke. He was also blessed with 14 great grandchildren; Michael, Ewen, Mary, Duncan, Evelyn, Evan, Nolan, Liam, Jax, Lincoln, Zaylen, Kai, Tyson and Brody.
Rudy was born in Brighton, England and as a result of WWII, he arrived in Canada at age 11 on May 8, 1940. He spent the next few years at Fairbridge Farm School in Duncan, BC. Rudy joined the Merchant Marines, allowing him to travel the world and eventually he met the love of his life, Jean Kennedy, from St. Andrews, Nova Scotia and they married in 1956.
The Maple Leafs, summer vacations in Nova Scotia, love of the gym and his daily fitness routines, music, pints of beer, the number « 322 », his grandchildren and ALL the extended friends of his family brought him his greatest joys.
After a 40 year career at Stelco in Hamilton, his days were spent with family, family and more family.
A private family service will be held on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Rudy Smith to the Fairbridge Farm School Alumni Bursary Fund or the Juravinski Cancer Centre.
