It is with great sadness we say goodbye to the Matriarch of our family, Martha Rooseboom, who passed away peacefully at South Huron Hospital on April 29, 2021 at the age of 91.
Beloved wife of the late Hein Rooseboom (1970). Predeceased by her daughter Minnie Deitz (2010) and son-in-law Gary Deitz (1996). Proud mother of Marg & Jim Sweitzer of Lucan, Albert & Trudy Rooseboom of Hensall, Martha & Bob Heywood of Exeter, Shirley & Kevin Nixon of Exeter, Brenda Rooseboom of Huron Park, and Minnie’s soulmate Brian Chappel of Bayfield. Cherished Oma of 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada, U.S. and Holland.
Martha was born Oct 4, 1929 in the town of Klazienaveen, Holland. She was the youngest and the last surviving sibling in the Wijbrands family. She met her husband Hein at an event celebrating the end of the war in 1945. They were married on April 4, 1950 and moved to Canada a month later. They began their life in Canada in Queenston but soon moved to Southwestern Ontario where their family grew to 6 children. Tragedy struck the family when Hein suffered a fatal heart attack in 1970 at age of 42 leaving Martha a widow. She started to work at Queensway Nursing home until she retired in 1993. She enjoyed meeting with her many friends and family, reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching her favourite shows on TV. We knew not to call her when those shows were on. She faced several difficulties in her life but always kept her smile and good nature. It was very common to be asked “How’s your Mom? She’s such a nice lady.” In May 2020 she had a fall and made the decision that after all her years of independence, she was ready to move into assisted living. She took up residence at the Exeter Villa Retirement Home and despite Covid restrictions she managed to keep her good spirits.
A private family memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Exeter Christian Reformed Church. Interment Exeter Cemetery. Though the service is private, the family invites you to join with them from the comfort of your own home. Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh. Arrangements entrusted to Haskett Funeral Homes, Exeter (519-235-1220).
A special thank you to the staff at South Huron Hospital and Exeter Villa Retirement Home for the care and compassion provided to Mom.
In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to South Huron Hospital Foundation, Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.
