Obituary of Roger FURBUR
William Roger Furbur, was born in 1941 in Heswall, Cheshire, England and passed away in the evening on June 9th in Saanichton, on Vancouver Island, three months shy of his 80th birthday. He had been diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and was managing to keep the disease fairly in check. However, quite recently his condition turned very rapidly for the worse.
Our Dad did all he could to make sure his children received a well-balanced education, both scholastically and through life experiences. For example, despite living in the English regions of Canada, he was adamant his children would be fluent in French. He also kept his four children engaged in as many sporting activities as possible, such as fly fishing, playing rugby, skiing, horseback riding, canoeing…basically anything that we could to enjoy the great outdoors. How can you not when you’re growing up in Canada!
Dad spent the better part of his career in the hotel industry. After his hotel management training in London, he chose to do a nine-month stint in the famous restaurant Drouant in Paris. His not-so-hidden agenda was really to be closer to his future wife who was studying to be a registered nurse. A good thing for us kids, for they had four children together and remained married for 24 years. As Dad didn’t feel there was much of a future in 60’s Britain, at the age of 25, he courageously decided to emigrate to Canada with three children and a pregnant wife. Within four years of living in Montreal, he was appointed director of marketing for a major hotel chain, Canadian National.
With the advantage that we would be closer to our family in France, Roger agreed to make another major move, one over to Bruxelles to head up InterContinental Hotels’ marketing department for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Yes, we did move around quite a bit when we were young, finally landing in Calgary, in 1976. The next ten years were filled with many jobs, from successful realtor to squash/racquetball club owner. Even an attempt to be mayor in 1986, but no one could win against the very popular Ralph Klein. His charm and teetotaler personae got him a lot of media attention and he somehow managed to come in third out of nine candidates.
Unfortunately, Roger’s life was dictated by his mental illness, bipolar disorder. This illness, left undiagnosed and untreated for years, made life very difficult for him and his relationships with family members, resulting in many years of institutionalization and homelessness. His saving grace was “retiring” to one of the most beautiful regions of Canada, snow-free Vancouver Island. He spent his remaining years doing what he loved best, going for long walks and traveling about the Victoria area, on the look-out for some great fishing.
The Covid pandemic and the strict quarantining still in place in Canada, his surviving sons who live respectively in France and the US were kept from being by his side. But fortunately, Roger’s youngest child who lives in Alberta was able to be with him.
Roger leaves behind the mother of his children, Cecile Louvet, his three children, Antoine, Julian and Lucette, his grandchildren Gabriel, Dominic, Damien, Ella, Dax and Oliva-Eve and his close friend Joseph. He is predeceased by his son, Jerome in 1988. We want to thank all the staff at the Saanichton Peninsula Hospital Extended Care Unit for the kindness and care over the last two years, and especially in his final days.
He will be missed.

Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Roger
