Robert «Whoopi» Wentzell
1928-2021
Robert «Whoopi» Wentzell died at Fisherman’s Memorial
Hospital Veteran’s Unit on Wed., March 17, 2021, at the age of 92.
Born in Indian Point to Mary and Allen Wentzell, he was the youngest
of 5 children.
He is survived by his son, Alan (Tiffany) Wentzell, Massachusetts, and
his 2 grandchildren, Ben and Samantha. Bob was predeceased by his
loving wife of 62 years, Stella; and his 4 older siblings, Paul, Ben,
Barbara and Kay.
Bob was always an avid fisherman and hunter and he loved the outdoor
life. He and Stella bought land in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts in the
late 1960s and created the Swan Pond Family Campground. They cleared
the land themselves, with help of family, and built a lake on the
property, which they kept stocked with fish. During this time, Bob
worked as the maintenance supervisor at Harvard University. They
owned and managed this campground until they retired in 1986, at which
point they split their time between living in Indian Point and Naples,
Florida.
Bob’s niece, Bebe, states «God broke the mold when Bob was
born». He truly was a unique individual, ready to share his
opinions, often playful and mischievous. Life was not easy for Bob.
He enlisted in WW11 and served in the Canadian Merchant Navy at the
young age of 15. As a member of the SS Robert E. Perry, he became
part of the invasion fleet that supported the Allied assault on the
beaches of Normandy on D-Day. The ships operation in support of Omaha
and Utah lasted for 27 days. During this time, the ship and its crew
underwent numerous attacks. Robert received the Legion of Honor in
2018 by the Government of France for his participation in the Normandy
campaign. He remained close throughout his life to other veterans.
He belonged to the Legion in Mahone Bay and also to the one in Naples,
FL.
He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Veterans’ Unit
at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg; Royal Canadian Legion,
Mahone Bay or Indian Point Cemetery.
A graveside Legion Service will be held 11am, Thursday, March 25, 2021
in Indian Point Cemetery, Old Oakland Road, Indian Point, Rev. Lee
Simpson officiating.
