Robert A. Ianson July 11, 1950 – June 23, 2021
Robert A. Ianson died peacefully at the age of 70 on June 23, 2021 in Kamloops, BC.
Robert was born in Rossland, BC on July 11, 1950, the youngest of three, to the late Douglas and Irene. As a kid, Rob loved taking things apart and finding new ways to put them back together. He found joy in racing his bike from the top of Rossland to the bottom, pushing each time to break the limit of the speedometer he wired to his handlebars. He succeed in breaking the speed limit as well as a few teeth.
After high school he trained as a heavy duty mechanic and later became a grader contractor working throughout the interior of British Columbia. He married his wife Patricia, in 1975 in Inuvik, NWT, and together they raised their three kids on a small farm in Little Fort, BC.
Robert loved spending time with his family. Even though he worked long hours, he’d bring home wild mushrooms, huckleberries, fresh corn, or a new dog whenever he felt inspired. He was most happy working on an engine, driving over a mountain pass, listening to his favourite music (preferably on an 8-track tape player), drinking cold beer, or swimming in a lake.
Although Robert’s life was profoundly impacted by a motorcycle accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury, he maintained a witty sense of humour and a gentle heart. He deeply valued his connections to friends and family. After his injury he volunteered his time to repair bicycles for local kids, joined the Kamloops carpet bowling league, enjoyed tinkering, and adding to his collection of “good junk”. He was a great crib player and had a magnificent memory for roadways and directions. He became like a second father to his friend Joe after they met through the Kamloops Brain Injury Association.
Robert is lovingly remembered by his older sisters, Virginia and Susan (Donald), his wife Patricia, his children, Shauna (Phurba), Krista (Scott) and Toby (Regina), his grandchildren, Morgan, Parker, Harris, and Chöying, his niece Jodi and nephews, Ryan and Scott, his friend, Joe, and many others whose lives were touched by his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s name to the Kamloops Brain Injury Association.
