Reginald Clarence Rawlings passed away at the Glenboro Personal Care Home on Sunday August 8, 2021 in his 102nd year.
Reg was born in Melville SK. and lived in Waldron SK, and Yorkton SK before moving to Glenboro when Reg was 15 after his father bought the failing Ashdown’s hardware store later known as Rawlings’ Hardware.
In 1940, Reg joined the army and then transferred to the RCAF, earning the commission of Flight Lieutenant. On Oct. 9, 1943, he married Ellen Soffia Johnson at Grund, after she had finished her nurses training and before he was transferred to Winnipeg. After his discharge from the Air Force in 1946 Reg and his family, Ellen and son John, born in 1945, returned to Glenboro where he took over running the hardware store and where he lived until his passing.
Reg was an involved community citizen. He was active in the Lutheran Church, was elected as a councillor of the first Village Council, belonged to the Chamber of Commerce and was President of the Kiwanis Club when Kiwanis Beach was developed and helped organize swimming lessons there. He was a lifetime member of both the curling and golf clubs and was on the board of Sr Housing (Glen Haven Manor). He coached Little League Ball and travelled with all of his children to cheer on their athletic pursuits as well as watching grandchildren in Glenboro and towns around MB. Seeing a need, he and his longtime friend, Steve Foord-Kelcey, built the Sprucewoods Inn in 1970. In 1987 he received the Gold Hammer Award for over 50 years of service in the Canadian Hardware business.
Reg was predeceased by his devoted wife, Ellen in 2020, his son John (1962) and his daughter Mary Ellen Juenke (2014), his parents Reg and Margaret, sister Margaret (Bill) McGraw, sister-in-law Margaret Bjarnason (Erling) and his devoted dog Elskan.
He is survived by his son Jim (Donna White) and their children and grandchildren, Michael (Becki Cornock) Kate and Benjamin, Scott (Lynnaea Hogg) Elsie, Gage and Tess, Elin (Brock Shearer) Callum and Ewen: his son Eric (Elaine Levi) and their children and grandchildren, David (Lora Pestaluky) Sam and Matt, Karen (Darren Kirk), Jon and Jack, Nick (Kim Hiebert): son-in-law Armand Juenke (Theresa Kalecki) and his children and grandchild, Alan Juenke, Kristin Juenke (Zakeri Parkes) Carter.
His most recent joys since Covid were being able to go for walks outside and being able to visit in the backyard of his former home on Donald Ave.
Things he loved to do: fishing, carpentry, travelling with many trips to Mesa AZ in the motor home, poker, coffee with the guys and playing birds in the bush, gardening, camping, especially at Sprucewoods Park, car rides, following children and grandchildren in sports.
He will be remembered for his genuine, warm smile, his friendly demeanour, cheery nature, his offer of a “drink” no matter the time of day, his love of family, babies, dogs and community. His family are all recipients of handmade furniture that he crafted in his retirement years. He leaves a legacy of preferring to work hard on innumerable projects helping family or community versus being inactive.
A private family service will be held on Saturday August 14, 2021 at the Glenboro Cemetery with Sharon Hamilton officiating. Friends that so desire, memorial donations in memory of Reg can be made to the Glenboro and Area Foundation Box 147 Glenboro, MB R0K 0K0 or to the Glenboro Personal Care Home Box 310 Glenboro, MB R0K 0X0
