Chase
May 1, 1935 – Aug 31,
2021
It is with great sadness, the family of Phyllis Christine
Chase, age 86 of Lake George, Kings County, shares the news of her
passing on August 31 in Ottawa, where she had been residing with her
daughter during the pandemic. She passed away peacefully at home
surrounded by her daughter Teena, daughter’s
fiancé Mark, and their three Australian Terriers (Branji,
Lilly, Rikky).
Born in Waterville, she was a daughter of the late Foster and
Stella (Steadman) Bezanson. Phyllis will be forever remembered as a
loving, devoted, generous, hard working, wife, mother, sister, aunt,
friend, and successful business woman. She was the quintessential
« Supermom » – juggling family, home, and career with
class and grace. Phyllis was well-known for her delicious cooking and
baking, and visitors were always welcomed by her smile and charm, and
a generous assortment of sweets and treats, with a cup of tea. Her
home-made ginger cookies, apple pies, and cherry surprises were
particular family favorites. She took pride in keeping her home
immaculate and clean, and folks often commented « you could
eat off Filly’s floor ». She was most content when
she was taking care of, and doing things for others, especially family
and friends. Most of all, she loved being a Mother.
After finishing grade 12, Phyllis attended Mac Business
College, and earned her diploma in secretarial and bookkeeping skills.
She then worked for the Annapolis Valley Canners, during that time she
met and married the love of her life, Cecil Chase. Along with her
husband, Cecil, and brother, Donald, she co-owned, and operated the
Bezanson and Chase Cranberry Company in Aylesford from 1967 – 1997.
Her sharp mind, keen business sense, and determination were an asset
to their business, as she was a « whiz » with numbers,
and excelled at accounting and taxes. Many family business meetings
took place in her kitchen over a cup of tea and many tasty sweets she
always had on hand. Upon their retirement, Phyllis and Cecil moved to
their dream home at Lake George. She continued to work tiredlessly
baking and cooking for family and friends, and helping others less
fortunate, and those in need.
Phyllis enjoyed playing cards, sewing/knitting, watching
curling, dancing, going to church, and listening to music, especially
George Jones and Charlie Pride. The radio in her kitchen was
permanently tuned in to the country music station, and she was often
caught humming along to a well-loved tune. In her later years, she
still enjoyed cooking and baking when she was able, reading, and
birdwatching. Phyllis took pride in grooming her three fur
« grandchildren », and feeding them doggie treats. She
enjoyed spending hours talking to her brothers, sisters, and nephew,
about politics, business, family, and any number of social injustices,
such as taxes, and solving the world’s
dilemmas.
Her smile, laughter, compassion, wisdom and wit was loved by
all who knew her, and will be terribly missed.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Teena Chase (Mark
Helpard), Ottawa; a brother, Eric (Anne) Bezanson, Dartmouth; a
sister-in-law, Maxine Bezanson (James – deceased), Cambridge; a
nephew, Eugene (Barbara) Best, Coldbrook; and a large extended family
of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her
husband, Cecil, in November 2017; sisters, Pauline Best (Sheldon –
deceased), and Edith Best (Almond – deceased); brothers, James
(Maxine) Bezanson, Elmer Bezanson (Gertrude Pineo), Russell Bezanson
(Sheila – deceased), and Donald Bezanson (Jean – deceased;
Cindy Boliver).
Cremation has taken place. Due to COVID restrictions, there
will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A celebration
of her life, reception and interment will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral
Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line inquiries and
