Paul Marier Sunday September 12th 2021

Marier, Paul (1955 – 2021)
It is with profound heavy hearts, the Marier family announces the passing of a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grand-papa, uncle, godfather, paramedic, neighbour and of Native descent. Born in 1955, in Temiscaming, Québec, Paul was known by many names; Pauncho, Paulo, Pyout, Cheech and Polack.
Left to treasure his memory is the love of his life, his wife, lifetime partner, best friend, confidant and caregiver, Deborah of 40 + years. They shared everything life can offer-together. They were a great team supporting each other in every way. Paul was the most amicable husband to Deborah whom he often kindly introduced as his “girl”. He had a deep abiding love for the woman who captured his heart and discovered a rare breed of a man. Admiration and ardour, a remarkable combination. The bonds this man forged withstood the test of time and circumstances.
With their union they gave life to two sons, Shawn and Jason. Paul was an extremely proud Dad. The boys loved him and respected him and did so even when he was furious for not agreeing with the wisdom of his opinions.
The essence of Paul was his family; his wife Deborah, his two sons, Shawn and Jason, his daughter-in-law Janelle and his two grandsons, Zachary and Félix. Paul was embedded in the hearts of his grandsons. Both boys wake up each day believing in the goodness of things, in the magic of what might be. They are uncynical, believers at their core. They were Paul’s favorite hello and his hardest goodbye, the apple of his eyes. He would do anything for them. The family relied on Paul’s understanding, good nature, love and affection throughout their lives and his memory will continue to guide them.
Paul is survived by his mother Éveline Lafrance (Gérard-predeceased), his sister Pauline Beauregard (Yvon-predeceased), nephew Steve and sister Denise Lafrance-Rivet (Luc), niece Stacey & family and nephew Eric and family. As well his in-laws, George and Harriet Smith (predeceased), Barbara Ann Bradley (Moe Shuya-predeceased) and his brother in-law Caryl Smith (Ginette). He will be fondly remembered by his »godchildren » niece Allison Smith & family and Christine Larose-Châteauneuf & family, who filled his heart with love and joy.
Paul will also be missed by “Miss Maude” his Service Dog of six years, who he adored and who was a key team player in his life.
Paul was a man nobody can replace. He was always there for everyone, family, neighbours, colleagues and friends. In love as in friendship, Paul was trustworthy and his company was appreciated by one and all. He will always be remembered for his keen sense of humour and knack of teasing others.
Rare are those who gave as “freely” as Paul and friends and family know that his proverbial loyalty was the soul of who he was. He led by a great passion and succeeded in attaining the most ambitious objectives. Through actions, Paul realized the true potential and nothing was more satisfying than seeing a project through to completion.
In early years, Paul enjoyed fishing, hunting, and travelling on his Gold Wing motorcycles to many places and logging many miles. One of the best things about riding was the freedom it gave him. The feel of the open road – freeing his mind from all worries. Paul also enjoyed watching his Habs play and was passionate about his Canadians!
Paul devoted 35 years (1985-2020) of his life as a Paramedic with the Greater City of Sudbury & Sudbury-Manitoulin Emergency Services. His occupation afforded him the opportunity to attend emergency calls for people in aid of his services and local transfers from hospital for ill patients in and around the community. He assumed a role in critical rescue situations and emergencies. It was an extremely fulfilling profession. Paul was dedicated to his work, took pride in it and he demonstrated his proficiencies.
Despite his illness, Paul was braver than he thought, stronger than he seemed and loved more than he knew. After years of courage and a strong battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, when the veil of depression lifted and the smothering effects of anxiety were removed, the hope of a new day brought realization that giving up would have meant missing out on some of life’s most glorious moments. Even in the last year of suffering with Cancer, Paul’s condition was debilitating for him and a strain on his family, but life went on.
The Marier family would like to acknowledge our healthcare heroes who went above and beyond to help provide Paul with the very best possible medical treatment and care.
