Obituary
PAUL JOHN MEYER (1968 – 2021)
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Paul John Meyer at St. Paul’s Hospital on December 3, 2021. Born on February 5, 1968, he spent his childhood and teen years in West Vancouver, attending first St. Anthony’s Elementary and then Hillside Secondary School.
People were the focus of Paul’s career. He thrived on being around others, working the room, and making meaningful connections. His amazing knack for management and his creativity in problem-solving early on found him working with Nigel Hogarth, Forzani Group, and Rona. Paul’s love of nature eventually drew him to Sechelt, where for over five years he worked with Trail Bay Properties, his wife’s family business. Paul set high standards; his ability to dream big, and to meet challenges with a positive attitude, was inspirational. Above all, Paul was happy when he made others smile.
Paul met his wife on the tennis court. Janet Clayton and Paul were married on New Years Eve 2017. Family and friends were everything to Paul. He loved and cherished his wife, his precious daughters, his parents, his sisters, and his extended families. Paul’s big, beautiful, brown eyes beamed warmth and love to those around him. His smile was contagious and he could always find a way to make you laugh. With a larger than life personality and his incredible hospitality, around Paul, you would always feel like royalty.
Paul’s love for his wife and family was matched by his love for nature. Paul was in his element when he was working or playing outdoors. He loved the garden and had a green thumb, just like his Mum. He was happiest around the ocean, whether heading to the beach with his daughters or boating with his wife and father-in-law. Paul enjoyed adventure—skiing, camping, and traveling, as well as many quiet evenings in the hot tub. Paul was full of energy and enjoyed life to the fullest.
The soft grey of early December reflects the deep sadness we feel as we say farewell to Paul at too early an age. Paul is survived by his wife Janet, his daughters Eve and LilyJune, his parents June and Ralph, his sisters Caroline and Sonia, his father-in-law Dick, his step-daughters Sarah and Allison, and many extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sechelt Hospital, the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, add an organ donor sticker to your Driver’s Licence, or do something to make your community more beautiful—plant a tree, grow lavender, or hang Christmas lights and make a wish for Paul and his family.
Fond Memories from Paul’s Parents
Is this true, has he really gone,
Our one and only beloved son,
We wait to hear his usual call
As he opens the door and enters the hall
“Hi mummy, Hi dad, I’m here again”
Is his usual greet, come sun or rain.
His bustling manner, his smiling face
Appears to us now from another space
It’s such a loss we can barely speak
Can we stand another week…..
Then strength of love takes over us
And we think of the times and all the fuss
He used to make of his mother dear
And ruffle her hair and tug my ear
So “Farewell Paul” you’re never gone
You’ll always be with us my son.
Snowy morning, 6 December, 2021
Paul
Where did you come from
you wonderful man?
With your hand on your heart
my heart’s in your hand
With your cheshire-cat grin
and je ne sais quoi
you’re really that special
and fill me with awe
Where did you come from
with your beautiful soul?
A lifetime of giving
has taken its toll
You’ve settled for less
than you really deserve
You’re looking for “THRILLS”
and I’m here to serve
Where did you come from
this man who adores?
You came from my dreams
and I came from yours!
