Patrick Joseph McNamara
(1928 – 2021)
Pat was a friendly, active, but modest and quiet man who had a heart of gold – if you needed something done, he would do it. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He passed away peacefully in his 93rd year at his daughter’s home in Orillia, Ontario on September 4th, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Madeline (Horrigan) and companion to Marie Burger for many years after the passing of his wife in 1994. Loving father of Gerrard (Sharon), Katie (Jeff), and Joanne. Proud Grandfather of Stephen, Shawn, Rory, Jessica, Teera, Virginia and Madeline, and Great-Grandfather of Isabella and Katie. Dear brother of Mary and the late Michael, Jack, Gus and Breda.
Pat was born in Limerick, Ireland on January 13, 1928 to his loving parents Michael and Margaret McNamara. He married Madeline in 1952, and after working at various jobs in the Limerick area, they decided to leave Ireland for good in search of a better life. He had two immigration choices – Canada or Australia. In true Irish fashion, the decision on which way to go was made by the flip of a 2 shilling piece at the pier, and in 1953 they boarded a ship for Halifax. They made their way to Toronto where they lived until 1958 when they moved up to Richmond Hill, where he stayed for the rest of his life, his last residence being the Richmond Hill Retirement Residence.
While in Toronto, Pat found employment with Smith Transport as an automotive electrician, later becoming CP Transport, working his full career for them, and finally retiring from there in 1991. In his retirement years he drove a school bus in the Richmond Hill area being well liked by many students and their parents.
In his off time, Pat became a stalwart volunteer around Richmond Hill. He coached kids hockey and soccer, taking an under 10 boys team to Mexico, as well as volunteering at the Mariann House. He also volunteered a lot of his time at the Richmond Hill Legion, being honoured with a lifetime Honorary membership for all his work fixing up the building and working with veterans. Pat was an avid golfer and loved darts, being on the Legion’s travel team.

Flowers may be sent to the Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge St, Richmond Hill, or memorial donations in Pat’s memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 375 (see www.rcl375.ca), and are greatly appreciated by the family.
