Obituary of Noreen Helen Aikman
February 13, 1936 – February 7, 2021
Noreen Aikman, age 84, passed away peacefully at Kootenay Street Village on February 7, 2021 with family by her side.
Born in Cranbrook to Clarence and Margaret Ryde, Noreen was the middle child of 7 children. As a girl Noreen worked at the soda fountain for her parents’ business, Quality Grocery. She was a member of the Cranbrook Girls Bugle Band, graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1954, and went on to Normal School to become a Teacher.
Noreen married Douglas Aikman in 1958, and together they made their home in Cranbrook. Noreen was a loving wife and devoted mother to her 5 children. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed baking, sewing, and taking care of her family. Her love of quilting and being part of the Cranbrook Quilters Guild brought her great joy. It was an honour for her to be part of the committee that designed and quilted the Cranbrook Centennial Quilt which is on display in the Railway Museum. She was a dedicated member of the Hospital Auxiliary for over 35 years. Noreen’s other joys were golfing, spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.
Noreen is survived by her 5 children, Randy (Kim) Aikman, Judy (Trent) Taylor, Sandra (Barry) Rudd, Allan (Charmaine) Aikman and Jim (Rhonda) Aikman, grandchildren Michelle, Lindsay (Brad), Sarah (Ryan), Melanie (Mitch), Amanda (Justin), Cydney, Robert (Kayla), Lauren, Brendan, and Ryan (Ella), great-grandchildren Hayley, Clair, Carter, Presley, Blake, Paige, and Charlotte, also her brother Bob and sister Elizabeth.
Noreen was predeceased by her husband Douglas in 2015, parents Clarence & Margaret Ryde, brothers Ernie, Arthur, & sisters, Evelyn and Loretta, daughter-in-law Maureen, and infant granddaughter Kayla.
Noreen’s family would like to thank the kind and caring staff of Kootenay Street Village and Joseph Creek Village for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Noreen and our family over the last few years.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary.
Due to current Covid -19 restrictions, a private service will be held at a later date.
