On Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital, in Ottawa, Nora Murchison passed away after a long illness. Nora Theresa Corley was born February 18, 1929 in Montreal, the youngest daughter of John Kevin Corley and his wife Anna Magnusdottir.
She was educated at Trafalgar School and McGill University. She received her Bachelor of Library Sciences in 1952, and her Masters of Geography in 1961. Her thesis was entitled « The Montreal Ship Canal, 1805-1865. » She began working at the Arctic Institute of North America as their librarian in 1954, when the library was located in Montreal. She single-handedly catalogued and cross-indexed their collection, while expanding and completing its coverage. She left the library richer, in 1972, when she married John Taylor Murchison. Together they moved to Ottawa. Nora wrote several entries for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and wrote three books: Polar and Cold Regions Library Resources: A Directory (1975), Travel in Canada: A Guide to Information Sources (1983), and Resources for Native People Studies (1984). In Ottawa Nora was active in the Ottawa Valley Guild of Stitchery, and created beautiful needlework. She was also very active in the Revelstoke Garden Club.
Nora was predeceased by her husband John, her parents, her sister Margaret Corley, her half-brother Lloyd Johnson and nephews Douglas and Jack Johnson. She is survived by her three nephews Lloyd, Timothy and Donald Johnson. She is also survived by a number of cousins, and many loyal friends. She will be buried privately at Mount Buchanan, PEI, next to her husband.
