In loving Memory of
November 23, 1924 – June 11, 2021
дедушка и товарищ – “Grandfather and companion”
Born in the U.S.S.R., on November 23, 1924, Nicola served in World War II, as part of the Russian Army. As a prisoner of war, Nicola was saved, when Germany was liberated, with military support from Allied Forces and the United States. After World War II, Nick left Germany, and worked in the mines of Belgium. He was given the opportunity to immigrate to Canada, and became a Canadian Citizen on May 27th, 1959. Nick was an instrumental worker in building the Canadian Railway at that time. Following this labor-intensive effort, Nick settled in the city of Sudbury, Ontario. He became a painter, working in the construction industry.
Mary Hrabchak (predeceased) became the love of his life. Through time, he served as her steadfast companion, and grandfather to Laureen McLaren Coffelt, and Lana Rae McLaren (predeceased). He was also adored by Emily Edna (née Hrabchak) McLaren (predeceased), who provided absolute dedication to his care upon Mary’s passing on June 4, 2003. With the unexpected loss of Emily, in 2014, Nicola was loved and cared for, from a distance, by his granddaughter, Laureen, residing in Memphis, TN, until his passing.
In his final years, Nicola resided at Extendicare Falconbridge. It was there that he was given special care and love by staff, who spoke fondly of his beautiful blue eyes, and his quiet resilience. Nick exemplified stoicism, strong work ethic, and simplicity in lifestyle. He refused to spend money, as he came from a life of poverty and human hardship. He was generous to his loved ones, but never to himself. His service and sacrifice shall be ever-remembered.
He shall also be sadly missed by Joseph Coffelt, of Memphis, TN, and by Rae Dale McLaren, currently residing at St. Gabriel’s Villa, in Chelmsford. Nicola’s final resting place shall be at the Civic Memorial Cemetery in Sudbury, Ontario, alongside Mary Hrabchak, Emily McLaren, and Lana McLaren.
