Mona Fisher died peacefully at the new Palliative Care Unit in Corner Brook on March 7, 2021 at age 97. She often said she had a wonderful life with family she loved dearly and kind friends. It was her fervent wish to stay in her own home with all her good memories, and she succeeded until the last four days.
She was born in Sandy Point, Bay St. George on June 9, 1923, the youngest child of Frank and Ulrica Renouf Pieroway. Her family moved to Corner Brook soon after her birth to pursue opportunities related to the construction of the paper mill. She married John M. (Ian) Fisher in 1946 following his return from World War II service in Europe and North Africa with the166th Newfoundland Field Artillery Regiment.
Mona and Ian were a great couple and made a wonderful life together for 54 years until Ian’s death in 2000.
Mona is survived by her daughter Lynn Verge, son Tony, and Tony’s children and their spouses: Sarah and husband Steven Stepien, Ian and wife Cindy, Cassie and John.
Mona was a “doer” for her family, her employers, and several community causes. She was conscientious, diligent, organized and took great pleasure in getting things accomplished.
As a young woman, she worked for Harvey & Company and Goodyear & House. Later, after her children had grown up, she was a court administrator, starting in Provincial Court, then serving as Clerk of the District Court, and ending her career as Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland.
She and Ian enjoyed volunteering together for Corner Brook Rotary Club projects – notably the Music Festival – and the Canadian Cancer Society, which awarded both of them certificates of merit and named an oncology nursing scholarship after her. As well, she made important contributions to the Corner Brook Status of Women Council, the Provincial Drama Festival and Theatre Newfoundland Labrador (TNL).
Mona kept active and fit as long as her health allowed. In later years, her favourite activities were housework, gardening, and walking in the neighbourhood. In her youth, she skied at the old ski club at the end of Massey Drive. For many years she played golf on the Blomidon Club course, and following retirement, she and Ian swam laps weekday mornings at the Grenfell College pool.
Mona delighted in hosting parties with much merriment and fun, happily doing all the decorating, cooking and cleanup.
She enjoyed travelling around the world with Ian and in later years, liked afternoon drives with Lynn, usually exclaiming afterwards how good it was to get back home. She had an affinity with nature and got joy from the sights through the window – especially birds, trees and clouds. Reading and watching golf on TV were other pleasures.
The family is deeply grateful to the circle of people who were kind and helpful to Mona over the past few years. Special thanks to Dave Lavallee, Sybil and Martin Steele, and Linda and Neil Robbins.
