Minnie Ground Thursday August 19th 2021

Born in Revenue Saskatchewan, Minnie Ground (nee Ryce), was the last surviving child of twelve born to Julius and Lena Ryce. She passed August 19, 2021 having lived a glorious 99 years.
Minnie left Saskatchewan as a young girl to come to Ontario and make her way in the world. She worked first for Bell Canada before apprenticing as a hairstylist. She later opened her own business “Minerva’s” on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill. She wasn’t yet 30 years old, and had her own business as a single successful woman in the 1940’s!
Mom then met Harold Ground and they married in 1947. When they began to have a family, Mom sold her business to her sister and best friend Evelyn Thompson who kept the Minerva’s name for the salon for many years.
Minnie and Harold had three children Steven, Carla and Sandra. She loved her children dearly and enjoyed being a stay-at-home Mom, until Sandra was in school full-time and then she wanted to work again.
Many in Richmond Hill will remember Minnie as the “milk lady” at Crosby School where she worked for many years. She was well loved at her employ. Mom never rested. She worked part time, sewed, was an incredible baker and cook, took Dale Carnegie courses, volunteered at church and school, and her children’s activities. She took many classes, and eventually volunteered at a local Crisis Centre at the Hospital managing crisis phones lines.
Up until Covid hit, Mom was an avid and accomplished bridge player. She played upwards 3 times a week! She also swam. She engaged in aquatic exercise classes 3 times a week as well.
Minnie was a social being who loved company, games, and had a wonderful sense of humour. We will never forget this vivacious, empowered woman who left us such a legacy that we are greater people for having known and been loved by her.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold in 2013. Also 11 brothers and sisters, her Mother and Father Julius and Lena, and her husband’s Mother and Father Gilbert and Maggie.
She is survived by her children Steven (the late Bonnie Warden), Carla (Gene) Chropkowski, and Sandra (Mike) Hirstwood. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Kiera, Dalton and Lindy, as well as 7 great grandchildren, Eva, Leo, Marlow, Grady, Mila, Lucy, and Jasper.
