Lily (Mavis) Dewan was born to Reg and Lily Barkway on May 24, 1929. She grew up on the family farm in the Rich Valley area north of Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. She attended school at the Rich Valley School to grade 8, then correspondence for grades 9 and 10, as many schools at the time only went to grade 8.
Mavis worked in the creamery in Shellbrook, and she met Al Dewan in 1948 at the Rich Valley Hall Dance. They were married on February 15, 1951. Together they raised three children, Brenda (Melvin) Samida, Brent (Pam) Dewan, and Donna (Brian) Chase. As the years passed by 7 grandchildren were added to the family, Robin, Melony, Brendan, Lanny, Kelly, Lhea and Jeff, followed later by 19 great grandchildren.
Mavis was a full-time mother in the early years. She was known for her excellent baking and her ability to make an amazing meal from even the worst cuts of meat. She was a librarian in Bjorkdale and in Porcupine Plain. She enjoyed curling, golfing, fishing and camping. Very special to her were the trips to the cabin at Turtle Lake, the BC fruit trips, her many bus trips, and Nemeiben trout fishing
Mavis is predeceased by her husband Allan, her parents Reg and Lily Barkway, sister Bet Jones, brothers-in-law Delbert Jones, Gerald Halayka, and Roy and Lloyd Dewan, sister in law Ruth Powell, and her parents-in-law Gordon and Nina Dewan.
