Vreugdenhil, “Matt” Matteus 1943 – 2021
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Matt Vreugdenhil on October 28, 2021. Matt died as he lived, at home, on his own terms; with loving family by his side. Matt is survived and will be terribly missed by his partner and best-friend of 32 years, Gillian; and his darling Olivia, who was his pride and joy. Predeceased by his parents Annie and Chris and sister Nel, and survived by his sisters Anke and Marianne and brother Daan and their families in the Netherlands. Matt immigrated to Canada with a degree in mechanical engineering and obtained a second degree in electrical engineering from Queens University where he graduated at the top of his class. Matt started his engineering career at Atomic Energy before moving to Ontario Hydro where he worked throughout Ontario as a District Manager until his retirement. Matt was a highly social, generous and humble man who will be remembered for his salty sense of humor and his love of a good conversation and fine Black Russians. Like all brilliant engineers, he operated on logic, practicality and pragmatism. Matt was a lifelong member of Smugglers Cove Boat Club in NOTL where he enjoyed many wonderful years. Matt will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Special thanks to Dr. Whitty for his kind and loving care of Matt throughout his illness. Arrangements have been entrusted to Morse and Son Funeral Home in Niagara Falls. Cremation has taken place. A private Celebration of Matt’s Life is being planned for family and friends that will take place in NOTL.
