Unexpectedly at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday July 22, 2021, Martin Ignatius Chesser at the age of 85. There are not enough words nor time to express how special Marty was to his family and to everyone he met.
Marty was a beloved husband to Mary Joan Chesser (née Dumontelle) for 63 years. Days before he passed, he mentioned that “he had a good life and married the right girl” and the love they shared was an example of what true love is all about.
He will be remembered as a kind and caring father to Marty (Maria), Greg (Janet), Mary (Bob Gavin) and Paul (Catherine) and proud Poppa to his 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Dear brother of Lee, Hugh (Mary-Ann) and Sister Bonnie Chesser of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the late Sonny Boy, Joy (late Robin Blair).
One afternoon when he was a young teenager, Marty was sitting on the porch with his father. His dad, a miner, asked what he wanted to do with his life. At that moment a plane was flying by and Marty said that he wanted to fly airplanes.
Born and raised in Falconbridge, Ont., he graduated high school at St. Michael’s College in Toronto and had a short stint at Queen’s University. He went to the Royal Canadian Air Force and fulfilled his dream of becoming a pilot. Over his 35-year career, he had postings and flew several aircraft in North Bay (CF100), Portage la Prairie (T-33), Winnipeg, Ottawa, Baden-Baden (CF5 and CF104), Toronto, Ottawa, North Bay (Falcon), Winnipeg (DC3) and finished his career flying on his last day of service.
Marty retired from the RCAF after 35 years of service, and he and Joan settled in Russell, Ont. He could not be more proud of his grandchildren Joffre (Emily), Melissa (Keith), Ben, Ellie (Sam), Abigail, Bobby, Bazil, Taryn, Andre (Trina), Emma (Jacob), Hayden and Callee, and his great grandchildren Martin, Katherine and a third one expected any day.
