Marjorie’s Obituary
World War II Veteran, Marjorie Florence (McMahon) Pace, died at 100 years, 9 months.
Marjorie Florence (McMahon) Pace was born on July 7, 1920, in Montreal, Quebec to Florence Mary Letts and Benjamin Francis McMahon. She spent the first years of her life in Montreal and when the depression hit the family moved back to the McMahon family farm in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. Marjorie completed her grade 12 in NS and trained to be a nurse at the Children’s Hospital in Halifax, then enlisted in the army as a nursing sister.
She spent a short time in London during the blitz and was then stationed to a neurological and plastic surgery hospital at Basingstoke. This hospital dealt with the young men who were shell shocked and those who had been burned.
After returning home from the war, she met Borden William Pace of Halifax and they were married on June 2, 1947. They were blessed with 2 children, Edward and Catherine.
Marjorie and Borden owned a Grocery Store (Pace’s Grocery) with a Butcher corner in Halifax for over 20 years until Borden’s ill health forced them to sell. Marj and Borden enjoyed visiting family and took a few trips to PEI, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. They retired to the village of Margaretville in Nova Scotia in 1976. They celebrated 45 years of marriage before Borden passed on in 1992.
Shortly after Borden’s death, Marj and a friend, Mary, enjoyed a great trip to England, Scotland and Wales – Marj’s first trip back since the war.
In Marjorie’s 80th year, she started wintering in the west with Catherine finally making the move permanent in her 83rd year.
Marjorie’s inquisitive mind and spirit awakened in the west when she began to enjoy travelling more. She was always ready for a few days in Banff, Kananaskis Country, or camping at McLean Creek. She enjoyed a trip to Colorado, an exposure trip to Africa, a cruise to Alaska, and, at the age of 90, a trip to Florida to meet Mickey Mouse. Additionally, camping at Canora, Saskatchewan, Portage La Prairie in Manitoba and White Sand Regional Park were always good times away.
Marj looked forward to her yearly trek to Nova Scotia and would spend anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks visiting and getting caught up with folk.
Marjorie’s curious mind was mixed with a great imagination. She loved to ask questions and liked to learn new things. She could see shapes in clouds, noticed the different colours of green in the trees, and could find the most amazing things on the face of the moon.
Her infectious laugh could lighten a dark day and challenge you to enjoy life.
She will be lovingly remembered with wild and crazy memories and sadly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
It is with great gratitude in their hearts, the family thanks Dr. VanHeerden and the staff at the Theodore Health Centre for their care of Marj these last 7 years.
A Private Celebration of Life Service will be held and live streamed at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2021, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. Interment of cremated remains will follow at a later date in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville, Nova Scotia.
