Maria (Grano) Salis
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Salis on November 10th, 2021 in her 85th year. Beloved wife of the late Franco Salis. Predeceased by her parents Antonio and Raffaela Grano and in-laws Leonardo and Giovanna Salis. She was a devoted mother to Joanne (Tony) DiTommaso, Aldo (Astrid) Salis, Ralph (Jamie) Salis. Cherished Nonna to Sara (Mike) Cino, Anthony (Jennifer) DiTommaso, Katherine Salis, Daniel DiTommaso, Lauren Salis and Beau Salis. Great-Nonna to Julian Cino. Dear sister of Enzo (Vanda) Grano. Sister-in-law to Maria Giovanna (Manzella) (Angelo) Filindeo, Rocco Salis and the late Salvatore (Pina) Salis and Andrea Salis.
Maria was born in the village of Mangone, Calabria, Italy and emigrated to Canada at the age of 19. She and Franco (who was already established in Hamilton) were married in 1956. Her only sibling, younger brother Enzo, arrived in Hamilton shortly thereafter. Their father, Antonio Grano, would eventually join his daughter and son in Hamilton after living in Vancouver for many years. Maria and Enzo and their extended families remained close ever since.
Maria was a seamstress in a linen business in Hamilton for many years, but when Franco took early retirement in 1984, she too retired. Together, they would enjoy winters at their place in Clearwater, Florida and summers at the cottage in Sauble Beach, Ontario. Maria and Franco loved to host their children and grandchildren and getting together with their friends to play cards with some biscotti and espresso. Family strolls at sunset are cherished memories.
Maria loved her children and adored her grandchildren and would spoiled them often. Maria found great joy in preparing and sharing her excellent home-made southern Italian cuisine. Hosting dinners for her family and friends or setting up feasts at picnics was pure delight for her. When the grandchildren would suggest their favourite at the many family gatherings (stuffed green peppers, home-made pizza, roasted eggplant, etc.), Nonna would accommodate without hesitation.
Our mother had a strong faith and will be remembered for her love for God and family. She will be dearly missed by her family and many relatives and friends in Canada and Italy.
We wish to thank the Doctors, nurses, and wonderful staff at Extendicare Hamilton. Your genuine kindness and care for our mother was greatly appreciated.
Visitation will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton ON, L8W 3M2 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday, November 15, 2021. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, 63 Highway 20 East, Stoney Creek, ON L8J 2W9 at 10:30am on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. A private entombment is to follow due to Covid-19 protocols.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada and Parkinson Canada.
