Margo Coleman (nee Rudolf)
Margo Coleman (née Rudolf)
November 29, 1936 – October 17, 2021
Peacefully, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Margo was born in Toronto,
the second daughter of the late Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Rudolf and
Anna Wiseman, sister to Joan (McKinney) and brother Robert; to them,
she was « Kitty. »
Margo spent her early years growing up on Brookfield Road in Hoggs
Hollow, where she attended Baron Renfrew school and spent childhood
summers up on Turtle Island at the north end of Lake Joseph in
Muskoka. Later, she progressed to Havergal College, where she was the
Marian Wood Captain in her graduating year. She attended University
College at the University of Toronto; she was President of the Pi Beta
Phi fraternity and President of the U.C Graduating Year Executive in
1958.
After University, she taught English at Oakville Trafalgar High School
and Forest Hill Collegiate. In 1961, she married Gordon Coleman; they
had four children, Rob, Bill, Mary & David.
Many happy summers were spent on Chaplain Island, Lake Joseph, where
she would « warm her bones » on the dock before plunging into
the lake for a refreshing swim. She was a fast and voracious reader
and a firm believer in an afternoon nap, or « quiet time, » as
she called it. She adored chipmunks but despised red squirrels.
She was a lifetime active volunteer for many organizations; a member
of the Junior League, and she served as a member of the University of
Toronto, Governing Council. In 2001, U of T awarded her an Honorary
Doctor of Laws for her service to the University and in recognition of
years of volunteerism.
In 2014, she moved to Maders Cove, Nova Scotia, to be with her
companion, Bob Weld. She spent happy years there feeding the beloved
wild animals and birds that came to visit her. She loved to travel,
especially on ocean cruises. Margo lived her final years near
Lunenburg, where her Rudolf ancestors were one of the founding
families in 1753.
She was a grandmother to seven: Jack & Abby Coleman, Camille &
Riley Coleman, Georgia Zaccak and Annette & Clare Coleman. In lieu
of flowers, please consider a donation to your favourite charity and
please hug your loved ones.
Special thanks to Alex Weld for her kindness and generosity,
especially in these last few years.
There will be a Celebration of Margo’s Life at a later date in
Toronto.
