In Loving Memory Of
Marcel Joberty
Dad was getting tired when he heard grannie gently whisper, “It’s time for you to join me…” As dad drifted away, an angel overheard grannie say, “Popsers, what took you so long? The peekee game needs a fourth player – your deal…”
Marcel Maurice Joberty passed away peacefully in his sleep at South Valley Residence in Valleyview, AB, on Friday, February 12, 2021, at the age of 86 years.
Marcel was born in McLennan, AB, on January 8, 1935, the youngest of two sons born to Maurice and Antoinette Joberty. Marcel’s childhood was spent in Prestville, AB, where he learned the French language at home. Dad attended high school in Rycroft, AB, and worked after school in the Red & White store and post office that his parents owned. Marcel’s early love of accounting, curling and academic excellence was evident during his high school years. In high school, Dad was the president and treasurer of the student body, enjoyed curling and was his high school valedictorian.
At the age of 18, Marcel was employed at Amerada Petroleum Corporation in the geophysical department. He embarked on an educational journey in the fall of 1959 and successfully wrote and passed his Chartered Accountant exams in 1964 after articling and training under J.H. Bennion in Grande Prairie. Marcel was one of the early partners in J.H. Bennion & Co. Dad left J.H. Bennion & Co. and began practicing under his own banner as M.M. Joberty Professional Corporation in 1985 and remained an active CA until his retirement in 1999. He was a practicing Chartered Accountant and an active member within the provincial CA Institute for 35 years.
As a resident, Marcel played an integral part in the growth and development of Grande Prairie. He was a key player in the construction and operation of several apartment and office buildings, as well as recreational facilities. Throughout his career, Marcel was well known in Grande Prairie as an individual who personalized his services, who believed in community service, and who knew, respected and appreciated his clients. Lifelong friendships were formed with many clients. Small-statured Marcel was someone who wore cowboy boots with his suit, drank Coke, enjoyed hunting, was fiercely competitive on the curling ice and in all card games, loved to ride a Honda Goldwing motorcycle, spent 20 years as an active Lions Club member, tried his hand at farming and enjoyed many rounds of golf. For many years, Marcel greatly enjoyed his motorcycle rides and weekly lunch/brunch meet ups with very special friends Trev and Ken.
While pursuing his professional designation, Marcel married Carol Grigg on July 2, 1960 in Moose Jaw, SK, and they resided in Grande Prairie, AB. Dad was an excellent role model for his three daughters and he taught each of them the value of integrity, professionalism, work ethic and honesty. Marcel valued family time and he took his family on vacations each summer. We camped with friends along the Burnt River, with friends in Whistlers campground in Jasper each May and we took camping trips to BC, Disneyland and across Canada. Throughout his lifetime, dad’s passions included reading, building puzzles, playing cards – especially peekee (canasta), and double/triple solitaire, playing bingo, taking trips to Las Vegas, doing Sudoku, attending STORM hockey games, and spending many winters in Parksville, BC, in his later years.
Marcel will be lovingly remembered by his three daughters: Shelley (David) Lorenz, Deb (Troy) Kindopp and Karen (Keith) Kjenner; eight grandchildren: Jason Lorenz, Lisa (Taylor) Mitchell, Kiara (Shane) Moshansky, Cody Otto, Shania (Mark) Goelema, Tawni Kjenner, Tasha Kjenner and Tiana Kindopp; four great-grandchildren: Hudson Goelema, Jessi Mitchell, Deacon Goelema and Kennedy Moshansky; four sisters-in-law: Joan Joberty, Sharon Grigg, Sandra Johnson and Memorie Grigg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Marcel was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Antoinette Joberty; brother Raymond Joberty; wife Carol Joberty; brothers-in-law David Grigg and Robert Grigg; and granddaughter Kristi Otto.
Living your best life with ambition, integrity, a love of family and family activities, a keen sense of accountability and a healthy dose of fun would be an admirable way to honour Marcel. Treasure the personal connection you had with him and remember the great times.
The family wishes to extend a huge shout out to the staff at South Valley Residence in Valleyview for their personalized, loving and compassionate care of dad during the past 10 months.
A Celebration of Life for Marcel Joberty will take place at a later date. Marcel’s wife, Carol, passed away one year ago and we will celebrate the lives of both of our parents, in a joint celebration, when it is safe for us to gather.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta Centre 2000 (#200, 11330 106 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 7X9) or to Ride for Sight (Box 52118, 311 16 Ave., NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 1K1).
