Dr. Douglas Harvey MACDOUGALL
On December 16, 2021, Douglas Harvey MacDougall peacefully passed away at the age of 102.
Doug is survived by his four children, Duncan, Mary, Doug (Jan) and Peter (Pat); as well as his four grandchildren Katie (Brad), Jillian, Andrew and Allyson: and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary: parents Duncan and Gertrude: brother Jack and sister Gertrude.
Doug was born in Central Butte, Saskatchewan where he spent the first few years of his life, later moving onto Moose Jaw, Regina and Souris, Manitoba before settling in lndian Head, Saskatchewan where he completed high school in 1935. Doug then attended the University of Toronto where he graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry in 1941. Following graduation Doug enlisted in the Canadian Army Dental Corp and trained at Trenton, Ontario and at several military bases in Great Britain. Following D-Day, he was assigned as dental officer to the Stormont Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in the Netherlands.
On his return to Canada in December 1945 Doug reunited with the love of his life, Mary Erskine, whom he met while in school at the U of T and they married. Doug established a dental practice in Wynyard, Saskatchewan in 1946. lt was in Wynyard where the family expanded to five with the addition of three children. Doug was very involved in the community, serving on the school board, Lions Club, United Church, Masonic Lodge, Saskatchewan Curling Association and was the commanding officer of the local air cadet squadron as well as spearheading the introduction of water fluoridation in Wynyard. ln late 1955 the family moved west to Edmonton where Doug remained for the rest of his life, living first in Crestwood for 52 years on what would become Candy Cane Lane and later at Canterbury Manor.
ln Edmonton the family grew to six with the addition of a third son. Doug established a dental practice in Edmonton as the initial tenant in the Medical Arts Building. Doug joined the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Dentistry as a part time pre-clinical and clinical instructor in restorative dentistry in 1958 and taught until 1985. Doug was a charter member of the Royal Glenora Club, later joined the Royal Mayfair Golf Club and was a charter member of the West Edmonton Rotary Club where he was
recognized with a Paul Harris fellowship and a life membership. Doug has been a very active member of St. Andrew’s United Church since 1956.
Doug was an accomplished curler, competitive squash player, swimmer, and golfer who was able to shoot his age multiple times. Golf and swimming remained important parts of his life with his last round of golf at the age of 99 in October 2018 and he was still active in aqua-fit classes in the summer of 2021. Doug supported the Citadel Theatre as well as the Edmonton Eskimos and the Edmonton Oilers.
Doug’ greatest love was for his family. He provided guidance, counsel and support through quiet leadership and wanted everyone to do their best. Education was important. The best memories are of the annual 4 week summer vacations at Kenosee Lake, Lake Pend Oreille or Lake Muskoka, where the family spent time together having fun and creating memories.
Doug seemed to have an innate ability to know what was right and to make correct decisions when they needed to be made, touching many people, all of whom benefitted from knowing him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday January 7, 2022, at St. Andrew’s United Church, 9915 – 148 Street NW, Edmonton at 2:30 PM. St. Andrew’s United Church is a full participant of the Restrictive Exemption Program. Please note that government issued lD and proof of vaccination via QR code or a negative Covid-19 test in the last 72 hours is required on entry.
The family would like to thank the marvelous staff at Canterbury Manor for their kindness, and their care of Doug during his thirteen years as a resident.
