Luba Zorski Thursday June 10th 2021

LUBA ZORSKI
1923 – 2021
On Thursday, June 10th, Popsi came and gently took Mama’s 98 year-old hand and off they went to waltz to the Blue Danube in Heaven.
Mama was our stalwart example of kindness. Her heart was filled with love for all – especially her “number 1 golden grandsons”. She would say that her legacy was being able to look after our two boys.
Her beginning was difficult to say the least. In the 1930s, Russia was in a deep depression and hunger prevailed. When WWII broke out Mama was kidnapped and shipped to Germany in a box car to work in a labour camp. Those horrible atrocities remained in her memory forever. It was there that Mama met Walter and they survived together. After the war they moved to Liege, Belgium where “Queenzie” was born. The coal mines there did not hold much of a future; Canada was the place to immigrate and build a new life – so they did! Mama and Popsi were hard workers, with great stamina and determination. Popsie built two homes with his own hands and talent. Mama worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the General Hospital until her retirement at the age of 56 when she helped raise her grandsons.
Upon retirement, Mama and Popsi travelled to Hawaii twelve times to escape the frigid Thunder Bay winters. While there, many friends were made, the International Marketplace was the gathering place, and there was even a German Club where they danced and partied. Back at home, a fun-loving group of friends gathered at Stanley’s farm on Sundays. In later years, these Sunday afternoons were spent picnicking at Boulevard Lake. Later still, Intercity Mall became the place to meet to discuss politics and scratch their game tickets.
Mama had a very close friend, Helen Suworow, whom she called her sister. Friendships were garnered in our neighborhood as Mrs Suworow, Mrs Daniw, Mrs Maznyczka and Mama would enjoy their evenings to chatting about life – mainly their husbands! This close-knit group could be seen going for evening strolls wearing their babushkas.
Mama was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Walter, her parents Matilda and Moses Golovkin, brother Alexander and sister Valentina.
She is survived by her loving family Irene and Sante Sottile, her precious grandsons Stephen and Nicholas (Kate Beaulieu), and great grandsons Benjamin and Daniel Woods. She was also embraced and loved by the wonderful Sottile family.
A sincere thank you to Dr. Kald for her jolly appointments that always ended with a couple of Russian words and even a line of a Russian song! Mama received excellent care at Chartwell Glacier Ridge with Lisa and her crew. She especially enjoyed the music of Vic Arnone since it brought back memories of the many Legion dances on Saturday nights.
Her journey ended at the TBRHSC Transitional Care Unit. Dr. Skunta is such a compassionate doctor who never hesitated to call or visit. Thank you to Nurse Donna and her kind, caring team at TCU.
A family graveside interment will be held with a Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. Arrangements are in care of EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma
Mama would always say, “be healthy and happy – and don’t forget the hugs!”
As a remembrance – give a hug to a dear one!
