Obituary
DALL’OSTO, Lidio passed away December 24, 2021 in his 90th year surrounded by family.
Born December 14, 1932 in Mosson di Caltrano, Provincia di Vicenza, Italy, Lidio was the youngest of 11 children of Angelo and Bortola.
Devoted husband of Letizia Frigo, beloved father of Paula Dall’Osto (Renzo Dalla Via) and Angela Dall’Osto (Tom Ryan). Cherised nonno to Alexandra, Olivia, Liam and Colin.
Lidio emigrated to Canada in 1954 by aircraft (a rarity in those days) with a few strong young guys from Mosson who were coming to work initially on the railway. They spent a few cold winters in Saskatoon, moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario and then eventually settled in Toronto. In 1959 Lidio went back to Mosson to marry Letizia and together they travelled by boat to New York where they disembarked and continued on to Toronto by train. Lidio resumed his job as a carpenter setting the concrete forms for sections of the Gardiner Expressway or as foreman raising skyscrapers into the Toronto sky. Every morning pre dawn he would hoist up his heavy wooden tool case on his shoulder and head out on the streetcar to the jobsite. In the meantime, Letizia set up house in their rented top flat for her new husband and 3 other ‘paesani’ who moved in with them.
With their 2 daughters they moved a few times from Toronto, to “Cooksville”, “Bramalea” and Brampton. Lidio even ventured into the pizza business for a few years. Lidio worked hard and provided well for his family. He preferred to be understated and lived modestly, consciously saving for their future needs. Family values were paramount. He was a man of faith. He never forgot his roots. When the opportunity arose, he purchased his paternal house in Mosson and to this day his family and their friends continue to enjoy vacationing and visiting “Da I Nonni Dall’Osto”
We nearly lost him in 1989 to major health issue but thankfully, it wasn’t his time as he still had a lot more things to do and places to see. He loved gardening. Vegetables, fruit trees…well more like an orchard, and flowers and blooms planted strategically using string and a ruler! Although he wasn’t a drinker he enjoyed making wine….with real grapes. He proudly adorned his Bar with hundreds of specialty bottles collected and gifted to him….much to the chagrin of his friends; his collection was to be looked at and not to be consumed!
Lidio had an infectious smile, a gentle demeanor and liked to hear of and see new things and places. With a grade 5 education, typical for his era, he was humbled and enthralled by technology, space travel, supersonic jets, massive construction projects and science and medicine.
In his later years, Lidio was very devoted to caring for his wife Letizia, until dementia began to steal away the sparkle in his eye and his inquisitive mind. He slipped away secure in the knowledge that he was greatly loved by his family and his legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren.
Rest in peace dad, you have done your part !
