Obituary for Leonard Hanna
Len Hanna, long time friend, passed on Friday, April 23 2021. He was one of the very few baroque trumpet players, the trumpet with no valves, as you can imagine, very difficult to perform on. Len was a student of Bob Oades, Toronto, and Edward Tarr, Basel, Switzerland. He settled in Toronto, became the trumpet player with Tafelmusic, at the beginning, later, trumpet and orchestra manager of the New Chamber Orchestra, and, later, trumpet player with Te Deum, Dundas, Hamilton, and Toronto. He worked for the Ontario Government at Queen’s Park, to make ends meet. He enjoyed bicycling, built himself a Mariposa, green, with all Campagnolo, had a vast CD collection, was always trying to improve his sound system. drove a stick shift, and enjoyed Wreck or Wabano Island in Georgian Bay, guest of Elspeth and Deborah Guild, and their beloved father, Carmen, assistant dean of Hart House, before his passing. He was a marvellous cook, and had many dinner parties, throughout the years, at his condo on the Esplanade, especially at Christmastime.
Len was a completely altruistic person. He would do anything for anybody, at any time, sometimes to his detriment.
In his later years, Len developed many health issues. He was very brave, and strong, but finally succumbed, just last Friday. He leaves behind his beloved brothers, Martin, French Horn player in Germany, and Nicholas, from Pickering, Ontario, his aunt Marlene and his beloved partner, Deborah Guild and her daughter Emily.
