It’s with broken hearts and profound sadness that the family of Leo McGrath announce his passing on Sunday, February 7th, 2021 at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. Predeceased by his parents Leo and Mary McGrath and his sister Pat Escott. Leaving to mourn, his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia (Boyles); daughter Rhonda Crickard (Steve); son Darryl (Madelyn, Lukas & Nikolas); 2 grandchildren Sydney (Jeff) and Jared; siblings: Sharon Bishop (Gary, deceased), Elizabeth Lacey (Dave) and Gene McGrath (Madonna); sisters-in-law: Carm Moran (Bob), Theresa Squires (Jim, deceased) and Mary Dunne; brother in law Tom Boyles (Frances); nieces and nephews, close friends and his long time cabin buddy John Motty.
Leo was a truck driver all his life, he started at Coca Cola but spent most of his working life with Harvey’s Auto Carriers. He drove a bus at Bull Arm during the Hibernia days and then moved on to Irving Oil where he retired. During his retirement he drove a school bus for special needs children. He finished his trucking career part time driving the Party Bus. He was a proud 15 year member of the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department. He loved at home with his family but his favorite place was at his cabin on Salmonier Line.
Leo lived his life in such a way that everyone who knew him loved him. He was a friend to all, young and old. Never stuck for a word, he enjoyed talking to everyone. He never missed Jared’s hockey games and joined us on every hockey tournament where he made life long friends with the players and their parents. He was a bit of a hoarder, if anyone was looking for something he probably had it. He lived life to the fullest in his 75 years with no regrets, complete honesty and kindness beyond words. He had the most wonderful sense of humour and fun loving spirit. He will live on in our hearts forever.
Special thanks to CCU Nurse Kara and Dr. Rose for their compassion and care during the last 3 days.
