Peacefully, surrounded by her family, on September 14, 2021, at the age of 91. Devoted wife of the late Allan. Beloved mother of Stanley, Elliot, and Mark. Cherished Grandma of Laura and Michael. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Leon and Tamara Lewis. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She actively advocated for several causes. As a McGill alumnus with a young family, she joined with other alumni to successfully lobby the McGill administration to allow students to earn university degrees as part time students – which at that time was not permitted. When that policy was changed, women with families could choose to earn a university degree and develop a career while still maintaining the family life they valued. This policy change allowed her to earn a master’s degree in Social Work as a part-time student and go on to have a successful career. She later completed another master’s degree in Continuing Education.
After she retired from Montreal’s Ville Marie Social Services, she worked part time for the McGill School of Social Work. There she developed and delivered a range of continuing education programs for professionals. She arranged for leading practitioners to provide workshops on the latest techniques to work with difficult cases such as child ual abuse.
Leiba was active in organizations that promoted opportunities for women. She served as President of the Canadian Congress for Learning Opportunities for Women (CCLOW) from 1983-84.
Her family is grateful to the many nurses and doctors of the Royal Victoria Hospital, the CLSC René-Cassin, and the Mount Sinai Hospital.
A private funeral service will be held. Shiva private. Contributions in Leiba’s memory may be made to the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors, (514) 734- 1825, or Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Ottawa, (613) 521-9700.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Leiba Aronoff 2021..
