Lawrence Lyle Clausen (Larry)
July 10th, 1937 – November 24th, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce our beloved husband, father, brother Lawrence “Larry” Clausen, age 84, passed away peacefully on November 24th, 2021, at Providence Manor in Kingston, with his wife Marilyn by his side.
Larry was born in Emo, Ontario on July 10th, 1937, to Asbjorn and Laura Clausen. He moved to Fort William as a youngster and lived in Thunder Bay until December 2019 when he moved with his wife and daughter to Kingston, Ontario. Larry attended Selkirk High School and upon graduation began work as an Apprentice with the Canadian National Railway. He was very proud of his 38-year career with the railway, retiring as Supervisor in 1993. After retiring Larry enjoyed meeting monthly with his “CN buddies” for lunch and his daily coffee with the guys at either the Westfort Coney or Robbins on Highway 61.
Larry loved sports, playing football for the Westfort Ukes in his younger days, and later coaching boxing for the Kinsmen Athletic Club and baseball for the Westfort Little League. He was a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers and in 2004 fulfilled a lifelong dream of attending a Packers game at Lambeau Field along with his brother and nephew. Larry had much creative talent. From an early age he was constantly doodling. In the 1970s he and a friend owned a company in which they designed and built wrought iron railings. Larry also designed and built his cottage at Little Trout Bay and was very involved in the design and building of his home on Glenn Court.
Larry was proud of his Norwegian heritage, and in 2012 fulfilled another lifelong dream when he traveled to Norway to meet his father Asbjorn’s large family. In his retirement, Larry enjoyed travelling with Marilyn to Arizona to spend a month in the winter. He also enjoyed traveling to ironman races with his daughter April, where she would often find him a mile from the finish line encouraging her to make it to the finish.
Larry will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn, and his daughter April. Larry is also survived by sisters Margaret Seekings, Laura (Bill) Green, and Janice McCarthy; sister-in-law Carol Clausen; numerous nephews and nieces; and by family in Norway including his cousin Ulf (Jorunn) Clausen. He was predeceased by his father Asbjorn Clausen and mother Laura Galusha, stepfather Tom McCarthy, brother Glenn Clausen, mother-in-law Pearl Hrynchuk, father-in-law Dmytro Hrynchuk, brothers-in-law Jim Daciw and Reg Seekings.
Marilyn and April express heartfelt thanks for the outstanding care that Larry received on Montreal 5, Sydenham 5, and Montreal 3 at Providence Manor. In particular during Larry’s final days, we felt so supported and comforted by the staff.
According to Larry’s wishes, no funeral will be held. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life is planned for this coming summer in Thunder Bay. Donations in Larry’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or UHKF Providence Manor. Online condolences and donations can be made through wartmanfuneralhomes.com
Dear Pops … Mom and I will miss you so much. You were my role model, my protector, and the one who taught me to never give up. We will carry wonderful memories of you in our hearts until we meet again
