Kenneth John McNeill
November 10, 1921 – October 31, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth McNeill.
Ken was born in Ireland and emigrated to Canada at the age of 5, where he lived in Virden, Manitoba until he enlisted in the Army when World War II started. He served for six years overseas and when he returned to Canada, he headed out west and ended up in Nelson, BC where he settled and raised his family. He worked at C.P.R as a heavy duty mechanic and was proud to be a Fireman for the City of Nelson. Eventually he met and married the love of his life, Leona Stadey. They were married for more than 40 years and traveled to many places where they danced and enjoyed life, always taking good care of each other.
Although he had no medical training, his large extended family affectionately called him Dr. McNeill because he had advice and remedies for whatever ailed you, both physically and emotionally. He was genuinely kind and caring and always there to help. He had a wonderful sense of humour and we all loved his funny facial expressions that always made us feel better.
Everything Ken did came from a place of love, always putting others first and taking care of his family until the end. We feel proud and happy as we look back with fondness on all the wonderful memories of 100 years and the joy he brought to all.
Don’t think of me as gone away
My journey has just begun
Life holds so many factors
This earth is only one
Just think of me as resting
From the sorrow and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days or years
Think how I must be wishing
That you could know today
How nothing but our sorrows
Can really pass away
And think of me as living
In the hearts of those I’ve touched
So nothing loved is ever lost
And I was loved a lot
Ken is survived by his wife, Leona, his daughter Bev Scott, his grandson Gordon Owens, his great-granddaughters Karlie and Jessie Owens, and his great-great-grandsons; Nikolai Stinn and Victor Thompson and many, many nieces and nephews who he kept in contact with. He was predeceased by his son Robert Allen McNeill and all of his seven siblings.
At Ken’s request, there will be no formal service. The family will hold a graveside memorial service in the spring.
