Obituary
DR. JYOTIRMOY ‘JYOTI’ DATTA son of the late Prasad Das Datta and late Krishnabala Datta and husband of the late Manju ‘Suvra’ Datta, passed away peacefully in his home in Toronto at the age of 90 shortly after sunrise on Sunday, November 7th, 2021.
He is survived by his sons and their families: Kironmoy ‘Raju’ Datta and wife Dr. Sonja Dhani, and grandson Jayanmoy and granddaughter Aarya in Toronto and Dr. Suvomoy ‘Biju’ Datta and wife Dr. Sanraj Basi, and granddaughters Daya, Keerat, and Baani in Edmonton. He also leaves behind one brother and one sister and their families in India.
Dr. Datta was born in Shibpur, Howrah District, in West Bengal, India and graduated from Calcutta Medical College in 1955. He practiced medicine for 61 years across three continents, impacting thousands of lives during that time. Some of his favourite memories were from his time in Hull, England and in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan, where he established deep relationships that lasted across both time and distance.
Dr. Datta lived a vibrant and rewarding life in Saskatoon for 35 years and was an integral part of both the medical and Indian communities. He was a voracious reader and a life-long learner, with a deep interest in a wide range of subjects. He enjoyed traveling, socializing, story-telling, gardening, music, photography, literature and was well known for his culinary skills.
Dr. Datta was cremated on November 9th, 2021 according to traditional Hindu practice. There will be a final funeral ceremony (Shraddha) at the Jai Durga Temple in Toronto on November 20th, 2021 at 1pm (EST; UTC/GMT -5h). The absence of his radiant personality and the brilliance of his wisdom makes the world a darker place, but his many strengths and legacy will continue to shine through those of us who will carry his memory with us.
