Obituary
HIRST, Joyce Margaret (nee Ringer)
Suddenly at Hamilton General Hospital on Monday, December 13, 2021 in her 92nd year. Beloved wife of the late John Arthur Hirst. Loving mom to Richard (Carol) and Robert (Kim). Grandma to Lee-Anne (Bruce), Matthew (Robin), Lyndsay (Rob), Jessica (Colin), Sonny (Mel), and Nik (Lisa). Great-Grandma to Ella, Tavish, Sheamus, Adelia, and Wiley. Mom was born in Hamilton in 1930 and lost her own mother at the age of 10. She married at an early age and gave birth to two boys. In 1958, as a single Mom, she took a one-year Nursing Diploma course and graduated as a Nursing Assistant. She worked for a number of years at the General Hospital in Hamilton and later in her career became an administrator at the Clarion/Lakeview Nursing Home. In the late 50’s she met the love of her life, John. They married in 1963 and were together for 49 years. They were a great team. Mom was feisty and determined and this, along with Dad’s work ethic, enabled them to build and share a wonderful life. Mom had many hobbies and interests which she pursued with vigor. She began figure skating in her 50’s and took a landscaping course which she used to groom their beautiful retirement home in Port Dover. There Mom joined a line dancing group who performed and entertained at many functions in the Port Dover area. It was at this time Mom found a new passion, her Shih Tzu furry family. They were such a joy to her and Dad. At one time they had five pups and would take all of them on their many camping adventures. In retirement, Mom and Dad enjoyed cruising and traveling the continent in their Fifth Wheel with Buffy, Booty, et.al. In the last few years Mom resided at Caroline Place in Hamilton where she met and enjoyed the company of many fellow residents. She always spoke so highly of her accommodations. They in turn called her « mother » and always marveled at her knowledge and quick uptake of almost any subject. A family celebration of her life has taken place followed by interment at Woodland Cemetery. The family is profoundly thankful to the staff, past and present, at Caroline Place in Hamilton for their support and kindness. And special thanks to the health care team at the Hamilton General Hospital Emergency Department for their care and compassion. Donations in Joyce’s memory will be gratefully accepted to the Waterdown Lion’s Club and the Hamilton S.P.C.A. Please sign the Tribute Wall at kitchingsteepeandludwig.com
