Obituary
Joyce Constance Morton
March 25th, 1928 – May 14th, 2021
It is with immense sadness, we announce the death of Joyce Morton (née Fawsitt) on Friday May 14th, 2021.
Joyce was pre-deceased by her husband of 60 years, Ken S., her son Kenny, brother Jack, parents Edward & Elizabeth, parents-in-law Ken & Helen, brothers-in-law Jimmy & Jack, sisters-in-law Betty, Jeano & Ena, and nephew Ted. Joyce is survived by her son Greg, daughter Lauren (Bruce), brother Tom (Casey), grandchildren Sidney, Nicole, Seth, Tyler, Kyle, Ashley, Marcus, Elyssa, great granddaughters Scout, Chloe & Willow and many nieces, nephews and their families. Also left to mourn Joyce’s passing is our special friend and loving caregiver Pam.
Joyce was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she spent her first 4 years. Her family moved to the UK where they lived in her grandfather’s home after his death in 1932 until 1938. The family including Tom (B. 1935) moved back to Canada where they lived in Montreal for 4 months before settling in Vancouver. The Fawsitts bought a home near 6th & Alma in 1941 and Joyce was enrolled in York House School. Two years later baby brother Jack was born. Upon graduation from YHS, Joyce was encouraged to attend university in the USA. Although she was originally accepted at UC Berkeley, the end of WWII altered those plans because the university cancelled all out of state applications. Joyce eventually decided to pursue Psychology at UBC. Upon graduation in spring of 1949, she accepted an internship at Riverview Mental Hospital at Essondale. On one of the first days there, she was introduced to a handsome young medical student named Ken Morton. A month later, they went on their first date to ‘Theatre Under the Stars’ in Stanley Park. He took her hand and never let it go! In the fall, Ken travelled to Montreal to complete his 4th year of residency at McGill. Many (love) letters made their way across the country during that time period. The lengthy correspondence ended up with a wedding on May 22, 1951.
Ken & Joyce welcomed baby Kenny in Oct 1955, lived in San Mateo, California from Jan-April 1956 then travelled to England shortly after. They lived in London for 6 months. After their return to Vancouver, the young family bought a home on Laburnum Street. During that time period, the family grew to 5, with Greg in 1958 & Laurie in 1960. Joyce began working as a clinical psychologist for the City of Vancouver. In 1963 the Mortons built a house in Kerrisdale where Joyce & Ken lived until 1993. During that time, they also enjoyed many family vacations at their summer homes. First on Gambier Island, then on Anvil Island.
In 1993 Joyce & Ken moved to Gibsons BC in an effort to find a quieter lifestyle by the ocean. In Gibsons, they met many wonderful people, including artists, potters, shop and restaurant owners, neighbours and in the later years, amazing homecare workers. We are all devistated by the loss of Joyce, but one reminder that helps us along is that she lived a long, incredibly full life. A bit of a sassy one with a quick wit who was dearly loved by all who had the fortune of meeting her. We’ll miss you terribly Mum, but we know you were ready to go; to finally be reunited with your loved ones on the other side❤️
A Celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joyce’s name to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, 928 W. 28th Ave, Vancouver, V5Z 4H4.
