Obituary of JOSEPH PATRICK MCNEIL
JOSEPH PATRICK (PAT) MCNEIL
June 28, 1960 – July 14, 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Pat McNeil, after a courageous two and a half year battle with cancer, at the age of 61.
Pat is survived by his loving wife Jo-Anne; daughters, Taylor and Sarah, pup Clarence; sister Missy Penner (Phil), nephews, Cole and Troy; sister Kay (Jamie Bileski); brother-in-law Tom (Francie) Brereton; Ron (Karen) Brereton, nieces Tavia and Amy; stepsisters, Kelly (Vasco Gil); Lori Brandt; many nephews and a niece. Pat is also survived by his Uncle Al and many cousins.
Pat was sadly predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Anne McNeil, brother Mike, in-laws, Ron, Frida Brereton and Frieda Brandt-Brereton.
Pat grew up in East Kildonan on Greene Avenue attending St. Clements School, Neil Campbell School, John Henderson Junior High and Miles Macdonell Collegiate. Pat pursued post-secondary studies at the University of Winnipeg attaining his Bachelor of Art (Economics).
Pat worked as a manager for TD Canada Trust for 30 years winning one of their top awards. He retired in 2015. In his teenage years, Pat worked at Eaton’s parkade and maintenance department.
Pat served as Board President of the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre Foundation and was an executive member of the St. Boniface Wildlife Club. Over the years, Pat also spoke at a number of TD conferences on Diversity and Inclusiveness.
Pat was a Thalidomide baby, born without any hands and malformed feet. Throughout his life he was not afraid to take on any challenges. Anyone fortunate to meet Pat was immediately amazed at his attitude and abilities. He truly was a role model and inspiration to others. There was nothing he wasn’t willing to try. He truly was an amazing man.
Pat enjoyed participating in a number of sports throughout his life: volleyball, hockey, skiing, flag football, golfing and curling to name a few.
Pat had a passion for cars. He could tell you any make/model/year/features from decades ago. He enjoyed working on them and even rebuilt his ’62 Acadian Convertible.
Pat was quite the handyman who loved to undertake projects. He had built decks at both his home and cottage. He completely refinished the interior of his cabin at Lester Beach. He enjoyed cabin life at Lester Beach for over 50 years. He will be greatly missed by the many lifelong friends.
Pat has an absolute gift for remembering stories and jokes. He had a great sense of humour and quick wit. He was fun to be around and enjoyed making people laugh.
When reflecting on Pat’s life and accomplishments, he has tons to be proud of and has accomplished so much. However, his proudest would be his loving family. Throughout his battle, they have provided the love, strength and support to help him every step of the way. He fought lung and brain cancer with determination and dignity.
Pat would like to thank all his family and friends for their love and support.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses and health care aides at Grace Hospice, Riverview and CancerCare for the love and care. A special thank you to Dr. Joan Flood for her love and support throughout Pat’s battle.
A private family service will be held, and at a later date a Celebration of Life when restrictions allow.
Donations may be made in Pat’s memory to Never Alone Foundation or Children’s Rehabilitation Centre Foundation.
