John MacDonald was born on September 25th, 1941, he was the youngest child of Joe and Sarah MacDonald of Campbell’s Creek. With 11 older siblings, (Marg, Pat, Mattie, Isabelle, Mary, Gerard, Vonnie, Angus Joseph, Daniel, Joe and Theresa), Dad always had lots of support and guidance. It comforts us today to know they were waiting for him when he passed on Monday, June 14th, 2021 at the age of 79 years.
In July of 1967, John married Laetitia “Litty” Russell from Kippens. For fifty four years, they were each other’s biggest supporter and favourite dance partner. Together they built a happy home where family members and friends often visited and felt welcome. They raised one daughter, Lynn, and four sons: John, Paul, Gary and Alan. Later, Rebecca joined the family as Dad’s favourite nurse and daughter in law. As good a dad as he was, he was an even better Granda to Ben, Sara, Claire, Nolan and Layla. His pride in each of their accomplishments was always evident to them and others. As a family we gathered together often and this has left each of us with many cherished memories.
An electrician by trade, he worked with the school board for 25 years. Going to work was never a chore for Dad, he saw every day as an opportunity to catch up with an old friend or meet a new one. The friendships he made were ones he treasured always. When he retired from the school board, Dad spent several years travelling to different job sites all over the country. During this time, he worked with several apprentices who’ve often told us how they appreciated Dad’s hands on approach to learning. This was a technique he perfected as he raised his four sons to be his right hand on any project he attempted.
Our family has experienced a great loss but we are comforted by the shared stories from former coworkers, teammates he played sports with, boys he coached in hockey, the people from the Creek, his nieces and nephews whose company he enjoyed immensely and friends from all over. When a family member has early stage dementia, you get to watch the highlight reel of times past. From his memories, it was a good one.
Our family would like to thank the friends, family and co-workers for the many, many acts of kindness during Dad’s illness and we ask God to bless the health care professionals in our area who are so kind and caring.
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held.
Daddies don’t just love their families every now and then, it’s a love without end…Amen.
