Obituary: JOHN BRODIE STEVENSON
JOHN BRODIE STEVENSON, January 5, 2021, passed at home in Halfmoon Bay, BC from congestive heart failure. He was born August 14, 1937 in Toronto ON, the eldest of five sons of working-class Scottish immigrants, John William and Catherine Stevenson (nee Cockburn).
John is survived by his wife, Donna (nee Jones), his children Scott (France Hébert), Craig (Sarah Liokstsis), Anne (Charles Whittaker), and grand-children Isabella, Alexandre, Graydon, Heath and William, and by his brothers David and Jim.
Proud of his Scottish, Orkney heritage, John was a graduate of Oakwood Collegiate in Toronto and Queen’s University in Kingston ON, where he was a proud member of the Fort Henry Guard. He was a passionate and dedicated physical education teacher and wrestling coach from 1965 to 1996 in Etobicoke ON who was recognized by his peers for his leadership, being known as “the great organizer”. He obtained a Master of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in 1981.
John and Donna moved from Richmond Hill ON to BC’s Sunshine Coast in 1999 to run Seawind Bed and Breakfast. For a decade, they enjoyed hosting visitors in their home. John worked as a personal trainer until he was 75 years old. He was an active community member whose many pursuits included travelling, playing tennis, running, mountain biking, hiking, dancing, and singing. He was an avid volunteer, taking his turn to lead the administration of the square-dancing group and the Sechelt tennis club. He was also an active member of the Sechelt mountain biking club and the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a prostate cancer survivor and chair of the Sunshine Coast support group.
John was a devoted brother, husband, father, and grandfather. In 2021, he was looking forward to celebrating 60 years of marriage, to winning more card games, to cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs, and living life to its fullest. He will be sadly missed.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date when it is safe to gather. In lieu of flowers donations to the Sechelt Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
